Talking To: Jay Brown

One of the songs in my weekly playlist last week was by Jay Brown. On the week of her releasing the track “Diamond” I was lucky enough to catch up with her and ask a few questions.

Jay is an alternative singer/songwriter originally from Northampton and is now based, to quote her, in “Sarth East London”.

With an incredibly unique and beautifully haunting voice, the track “Diamond” is epic!

Let’s hear what the lady herself has to say…

So, the brilliant track “Diamond” came out this week – have you had a “brilliant” week?

I am really happy your into ‘Diamond’. Its been a great week for the song I have had over 7000 people listen to it which more than the last song I released ‘ we are the people’. It is exciting to feel things growing

I have finally caught the christmas spirit! I’ve been working on some new songs ready to record next year and I will be releasing a little diamonds remix EP. I am not usually a big fan of remixes but I have got some friends such as – Alias, Francobollo, Will (Port Isla), Tamu. It more exciting for me when I have someone you know personally working on it.

Your voice is very unique and that especially comes through on that acoustic version, when did you start performing?

Thanks! I started performing when I was in school. Talent contests, christmas concerts, in the shower ha! My family and school was very supportive and really saw the importance of developing creativity no matter what form it took.

I love Rufus Wainwright and Bastille and you have been linked to both of them – how was that?

Being linked with them both has really encouraged me to keep going. Bastille and their team really encouraged me on a personal level they gave me a support slot and collaborated with me which I am very thankful for as it gave me a little more exposure. Supporting Rufus was crazy! I saw him play Glastonbury 2012, didn’t think for one second I’d be supporting him 2 years later. Crazy!

Who would you like to work with next?

I am really just concentrating on my own stuff at the moment. I just finished an EP called ‘My Name is Her’ that I worked on with my band. It’s very…..’exposing’ is the word. I’m excited to get that out in Feb and start on some new stuff. I guess if I could collaborate with anyone though right now it would be Sharon Van Etten, Mike Skinner…..dare I say Thom Yorke ha!

The X Factor has just ended – as a young up and coming artist these days what do you think of the talent show format?

I can only speak for myself and in this case its just not for me. I enjoy developing gradually and organically.

What’s on your mp3 player right now?

I’m listening to Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen, Torres, St Vincent and Wiz Khalifa

A few new ones on me – I’ll be sure to “SoundCloud them” later – is that a thing, like Google it…Do you know what the number one song was on the day you were born?

Ahhhh the beauty of Google…

You Just Keep Me Hangin’ On” – Kim Wilde (US)
I Wanna Dance With Somebody” – Whitney Houston (UK)

That’s pretty cool to know! I love both those songs.

Tell me something no one will know about Jay Brown.

I hate dirty corners!

Make sure your corners are clean before Jay comes to visit!

What’s the best Christmas present you have ever been given?

A new guitar was pretty damn cool!

Whats your plans and goals for 2015?

At the start of the year I release a single and a 4 track EP on February 23rd. We’ll celebrate that release at the ‘Waiting room’ in Stoke Newington London! Tickets are on sale noooooow 🙂

Not gigging between now and then is gunna be torture. The ultimate plan is to be recording some new stuff and playing loads more live shows.

Thanks for answering my questions Jay and I look forward to hearing more from you in 2015!
