Back in March I came across a band called HATS after hearing their track “Let Me In” on the BIRP! playlist and I was keen to hear more. The guys were kind enough to answer a few of my questions.
HATS are two brothers, John and Garry Kerr, originally from Scotland and now living in Manchester. They are clever engineers by day and even more clever musicians by night.
So guys – what have you been up to this week?
Other than working our day jobs as Process Engineers, we have just put a free “Merry Christmas EP” this week that includes two songs which we are really fond of! It includes our take on “Mermaids” by the awesome Futurecop! and “Past Years” by Timecop1983. We have added some pianos and guitars to the tracks too!
Far from festive but genius just the same! You are from Ayrshire, Scotland and now live in Manchester – which crowds are the best? Scottish or English?
We haven’t played to an English crowd…yet! But we have been in the crowd at a few gigs recently and I would have to say it is a close one!
You get splinters if you sit on the fence, you know but great answer! Brothers usually have a turbulent relationship when working together – do you have any artistic differences?
I think we have a good working relationship when it comes to music. We both have very similar tastes and I think this really helps. Like any sibling relationships there can be some disagreements however we seem to get there in the end!
No Oasis style bust ups planned then, great to hear! One of the things I love about your sound is that you can hear the Scottish accent – do you think it’s important that this comes through on your music?
To be honest, I never really thought about the Scottish accent when I sing but I’m glad you can hear it. I don’t try to emphasize it, it’s just how we naturally sing. One thing I cannot stand is singers putting over-exaggerated accents while singing.
I agree. It’s subtle but it’s superb! The X Factor has just ended – as a young up and coming band these days what do you think of the talent show format?
We both used to love the X-factor when we were younger, sadly we don’t pay as much attention these days. We don’t have much against the talent shows, as long as the music in the end is good!
You are not missing much these days! What’s on your mp3 player right now?
Right now we are both listening to a lot of post-rock, math rock and 90’s Emo stuff. Currently we both really love bands like Gates, Colossal, American Football, Joie De Vivre and Helios.. This is just a small selection of the stuff to give you an idea…
Excellent – I’ll be sure to check all of them out! Do you know what the number one song was on the day you were born?
No, but I have a feeling its something stupid like a Simpsons song or something like that…
Ha ha, pretending you don’t know. Yes, it was “Do The Bartman” by The Simpsons. Brilliant and I will be expecting a HATS remix! So, why the name HATS?
We called ourselves HATS after one of our favourite albums of all time. It’s the 2nd album from the band The Blue Nile. We believe it is a musical masterpiece – they really are a Scottish treasure.
What’s the best Christmas present you have ever been given?
Ah a tricky one – all our Christmases have been awesome…for Christmas, one year we went to Australia with our family which we thought was pretty great!
Well I hope you told Santa that you would be there instead! What’s your plans and goals for 2015?
For 2015, we want to continue making music! And get some live gigs on the go!!
Good plan! Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions – have a great Christmas and all the best for 2015!
