I have a playlist that contains every UK number one song since charts began in 1952. Thanks to EveryHit, this is a fairly simple process. Let’s remind ourselves of these songs.

“Michael” by The Highwaymen was Number One on 14th October 1961 and stayed there for one week.

Get your marshmallows out and get toasting them on the camp fire. This is a folk song of the highest order. So, who is this Michael dude I hear you ask? Well, apparently – the song refers to the Archangel Michael. In Christian tradition, Michael is often regarded as a psychopomp, or conductor of the souls of the dead. Pretty cool right? Imagine when Michael goes for a job interview and is asked “what was your last job. Mike?” to which he could proudly reply “I was a psychopomp” – awesome!

OMG – Pft me…
