1993: I ♥ The Eurovision Song Contest

For the first of a million occasions the contest was held in Ireland in 1993. It was hosted by a lady called Fionnuala Sweeny and she entered the stage in,a way that can only be described as an Alien version of Stars In Their Eyes.

Tonight Matthew...After speaking in English, French, Gaelic and Klingon she soon got the biggest contest to date underway…

This year the UK decided to put forward one of my favourite 80’s pop stars. The wonderful Sonia sang “Better The Devil You Know”. She’s bubbly, fun and can belt out a tune too.

I’m not quite sure why she decided to dress up like Tinky Winky or maybe this is where the Teletubbies got their inspiration from – no offence, Sonia.

She delivered an amazing performance of a perfect song choice. It was a nail biting finish as it came down to the very, very last vote. It could have went either way but alas, it was better the devil that Sonia didn’t know because sadly, she lost.

Well done though, still one of my favourite UK entries so thank you Sonia…

There’s just something I love about hearing songs sung in French and this song from Switzerland was pretty good. At the time I could pick out some words that I recognised from my French classes but not much. When I watched the video again just now I was happy to see that there was English subtitles….although when the first few translated lyrics appeared I did think it was a joke…

1993 was the year that, sadly, Luxembourg ever competed. I think the main reason for this is because shortly after this performance, Luxembourg received a telephone call from the 1980s and to this day they are still on that same phone call…

The song from Finland was really quite good, it’s just unfortunate that all the English speakers who don’t understand Finnish think she is singing about how she needs to go “to the loo” to take a big dump…

My knowledge of the war that went on in Yugoslavia is not great. However,  from watching the entry from Bosnia and then the entry from Croatia I would say Bosnia definitely started it…

As I mentioned Sonia was well and truly pipped at the post by the winning song from the reigning champions, Ireland. Despite allowing Chucky’s mother, aka Niamh Kavanagh, sing their song they still won…

Until next time, carry on camping.
