When it comes to new music, I really enjoy sitting down with my noise-cancelling BOSE headphones on and playing an album from start to finish to truly feel every element of the lyrics, production and vocals. I love to discover brand new bands and music and being open to what I am about to hear.
I was asked to review the debut album from US duo Teammate, who out of a romantic relationship breakdown, they formed a strong musical relationship and found that working together on music would be their forté. I was excited about this premise, and I was not to be disappointed.
A quick background on TeamMate…
There’s a rich history in rock of exes making beautiful music together. But what makes TeamMate’s story particularly compelling is how insurmountable drummer Dani Buncher and singer-keyboardist Scott Simons’ break up seemed. One day they were daydreaming about growing old together, and the next, Dani came out to her boyfriend. The two had been dating for a full decade.
The year may be 2017, but the music on this album transports you back to the mid-1980’s when electronica was king and the music was very bold and daring. The opening track. ‘Nothing’s Ever Over’ sets the scene completely and is a rousing pop hit which you can’t help but nod along too. The rousing pop hits don’t stop there, though, other highlights on the album to check out are ‘What You Got’, ‘Until You Find Me’ and ‘Into Motion’.
I rated the album in iTunes…
I was really impressed with the musicality on this album, especially the percussion and I would imagine they would put on a fantastic live gig. Talk About Pop Music will be hopefully be interviewing the band at a future date so please get in contact if you have any questions you would like to ask them. In the meantime, don’t forget to go and listen to the album yourselves on the normal music outlets. Below you can check the album out on Spotify.
