Thirty years ago: UK top 40 singles chart for Sunday 9th October 1988

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 3rd to midnight on Saturday 8th October 1988.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were five new entry’s, twelve climbers and two non-movers. And it was announced like this…

40. Milli Vanilli – “Girl You Know It’s True”
New entry from this German duo with their debut single.

39. Brother Beyond – “The Harder I Try”
Week 10 and the boys are down nine from No.30 last week.

38. The Commodores – “Easy”
Lionel and Co. fall twelve this week after seven weeks on the top 40.

37. Spear Of Destiny – “So In Love With You”
New entry at No.36 last week, down one place this week for this UK rock band.

36. Luther Vandross – “Any Love”
New entry for Luther this week with the title track of his sixth studio album released last month.

35. Julian Cope – “Charlotte Anne”
Julian climbs two places this week having entered the chart at No.37 seven days ago.

34. Bomb The Bass – “Don’t Make Me Wait”
Tim falls five places this week with his third single release of the year.

33. Bros – “I Quit”
Matt, Luke and Craig are down another nine places this week with their fourth single from “Push”.

32. Salt’n’Pepa – “Shake Your Thang”
The girls fall four this week with their second single that followed “Push It”.

31. Sabrina – “All Of Me”
The ‘buxom’ Italian songstress climbs seven places this week from her new entry last week at No.38.

30. Yazz and The Plastic Population – “The Only Way Is Up”
Down seven this week for this former number one, that has now sold over 600,000 copies!

29. Enya – “Orinoco Flow”
Here’s a newcomer to the top 40 as a solo artist who previously performed with Clannad. This is the lead single from her second solo studio album due very soon.

28. Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine – “Anything For You”
Down eight this week for Gloria and the fourth single from her 1987 album “Let It Loose”, which has been re-released here as “Anything For You”.

27. Bon Jovi – “Bad Medicine”
Also down eight this week for Jon, Ritchie and the boys who are number one on the album chart with “New Jersey”!

26. Yello – “The Race”
And another one down eight this week for Dieter and Boris with this face moving number!

25. Sinitta – “I Don’t Believe In Miracles”
Just a climb of two this week for Sinitta and the second of SIX SAW songs on this weeks chart!

24. The Proclaimers – “I’m Gonna Be (500 miles)”
A fall of nine this week for Craig and Charlie and their sixth week on the top 40.

23. Bananarama – “Love, Truth And Honesty”
Sara, Keren and Jacqui get another three place climb this week and doing well with their first self-penned number in their new form.

22. Hazell Dean – “Turn It Into Love”
Hazell is down just one place this week having peaked at No.21 last week with her sixth UK top 40 hit.

21. The Christians – “Harvest For The World”
The Christians are back with this cover of The Isley Brothers 1976 classic and get a big new entry this week.

20. D Mob – “We Call It Acieed”
Dancing Danny D and his ‘mob’ get this weeks highest new entry with this transient dance anthem that’s top 5 in the dance chart as well.

19. T’Pau – “Secret Garden”
Carol, Ron and the boys go up three this week with the lead single from their new album “Rage” released in two weeks time.

18. Duran Duran – “I Don’t Want Your Love”
After a climb of six places last week, Simon and the boys drop four this week with the lead single from “Big Thing”.

17. Alexander O’Neal – “Fake ’88”
Down one place for Alexander this week after four weeks on the chart.

16. The Beatmasters featuring PP Arnold – “Burn It Up”
This weeks highest climber is up nineteen places from No.35 and another top 5 tune on the dance chart.

15. Kim Wilde – “Never Trust A Stranger”
Last weeks highest new entry is up seventeen places this week and its top ten across Europe already!

14. Bill Withers – “Lovely Day ’88”
Bill falls six places this week with his remixed 1977 global smash hit.

13. The Pasedenas – “Riding On A Train”
Week three at No.13 for the boys from London and refusing to move up or down!

12. The Pet Shop Boys – “Domino Dancing”
Chris and Neil fall three this week having peaked at No.7 two weeks ago with their new track.

11. Inner City – “Big Fun”
Down just one this week for a four week chart topper on the dance chart that’s down to No.2 this week.

10. Phil Collins – “Groovy Kind Of Love”
Former number one Phil drops five this week with the song from his debut film ‘Buster’.

9. Jason Donovan – “Nothing Can Divide Us”
After two weeks at No.6, Jason falls three places this week with his debut single.

8. Wee Papa Girl Rappers – “Wee Rule”
Last weeks highest climber get another nine places added to it and a top ten placing for these two London girls with their debut solo single.

7. Erasure – “A Little Respect”
Vince and Andy continue to climb, they get another five on top of last weeks seven with the third single from “The Innocents”.

6. Rick Astley – “She Wants To Dance With Me”
Rick is up one this week with the highest placed SAW song on this weeks chart!

5. The Hollies – “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother”
Two weeks ago they were number one, now the Manchester group are down three places this week.

4. Womack And Womack – “Teardrops”
Yet another week at number four for husband and wife Cecil and Linda Womack, with a song that’s topped the charts the world over.

3. Bobby McFerrin – “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”
Bobby goes up eight this week having climbed fourteen the previous week with this US number one, it’s heading that way here now!

2. U2 – “Desire”
Last weeks number one is down one place this week for Bono and the boys.

1. Whitney Houston – “One Moment In Time”
If you climb two places from number three then you’re at the top! Whitney gets her third UK number one this week with the official anthem from this year’s Olympic Games!
