Thirty years ago: UK top 40 singles chart for Sunday 30th October 1988

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 24th to midnight on Saturday 29th October 1988.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were five new entry’s, thirteen climbers and two non-movers. And it was announced like this…

40. Simon Harris – “Here Comes That Sound”
New entry from the UK DJ and producer, the follow up to his top 20 hit “Bass (How Low Can You Go)” earlier this year.

39. Chris De Burgh – “Missing You”
New entry for Chris and the first single from his new album “Flying Colours”.

38. Sabrina – “All Of Me”
Down eleven places for Sabrina this week after five weeks on the top 40 and looks like her last.

37. U2 – “Desire”
This former number one is down just seven this week and gets a sixth week on the chart.

36. The Hollies – “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother”
Another former number one and down ten places this week for the Manchester group. The original made it to No.3!

35. T’Pau – “Secret Garden”
Down twelve this week for the Shrewsbury group who are No.4 on the album chart this week with “Rage”.

34. The Pasedenas – “Riding On A Train”
Also falling ten places this week are the boys from London who release their album “To Whom It May Concern” tomorrow.

33. Sinitta – “I Don’t Believe In Miracles”
Down eight this week for Sinitta with the first new single since her self-titled debut album earlier this year.

32. Level 42 – “Take A Look”
Up two places this week for Mark, Mike, Wally, Phil, Boon and Krys and the second single from their album “Staring At The Sun”.

31. Prince – “I Wish U Heaven”
New entry for Prince and the third single from his album number one album “Lovesexy”.

30. Brother Beyond – “He Ain’t No Competition”
New entry for this quintet with the single that follows “The Harder I Try”, which left the top 40 just three weeks ago.

29. Kraze – “Party House”
Up six places this week for this club tune that was a new entry last week.

28. Bryan Ferry – “Let’s Stick Together”
This weeks highest new entry is this return of former Roxy Music frontman Brian with this re-release of his 1974 hit.

27. Richie Rich – “All House You”
Down five places this week for another dance chart top ten hit after just three weeks on the top 40.

26. Tanita Tickaram – “Twist In My Sobriety”
Up another three places this week for Tanita with the second single from her debut album “Ancient Heart”.

25. Guns N Roses – “Welcome To The Jungle”
One of last weeks new entries gets a climb of six places this week for this LA group formed in 1985.

24. Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine – “1-2-3”
Up thirteen places this week for Gloira after a new entry last week with the fourth single from their album “Anything For You”.

23. Jolly Rodger – “Acid Man”
Up another five places this week for this dance chart top 5 hit now.

22. Inner City – “Big Fun”
Former dance chart number one is down seven on the top 40 this week in its ninth week so far…!

21. Jason Donovan – “Nothing Can Divide Us”
Down just one place this week for Jason with his debut single. And apparently there’s something big happening for his next single..and it’s not that far away!

20. Rick Astley – “She Wants To Dance With Me”
Rick falls seven places this week with the first track from his forthcoming second album.

19. Womack And Womack – “Teardrops”
Also down seven places this week but celebrating ten weeks on the top 40 in total so far.

18. Phil Collins – “Groovy Kind Of Love”
Down just two this week for Phil and showing just how big his film ‘Buster’ has been with eleven weeks now on the top 40!

17. Robin Beck – “The First Time”
This weeks highest climber is up TWENTY TWO places from last weeks new entry at No.39, for the Coca-Cola song!

16. Beatmasters featuring P.P. Arnold – “Burn It Up”
After four weeks of climbing, it’s down two this week for this dance chart top 3 hit.

15. Deacon Blue – “Real Gone Kid”
Up a further six places this week for this Scottish group and their first UK top 20 hit!

14. Royal House – “Can You Party?”
Up three this week for the No.4 song on this weeks dance chart.

13. Kim Wilde – “Never Trust A Stranger”
Kim falls four this week, but “Close” is still top ten!

12. Bobby McFerrin – “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”
Down five this week for Bobby, who peaked at No.2 only two weeks ago!

11. The Christians – “Harvest For The World”
After three weeks of climbing, it’s down three for The Christians, who are working on their second studio album, due out next year.

10. Wee Papa Girl Rappers – “Wee Rule”
Down three places this week for the sisters from London with their follow up to “Heat It Up” that reached No.21.

9. Erasure – “A Little Respect”
Down five for Vince and Andy this week, and they are working on a new EP of songs for Christmas!

8. Robert Palmer – “She Makes My Day”
Last weeks highest climber is up another ten places, this is Robert’s first top ten hit for over two years.

7. D Mob – “We Call It Acieed”
Down three places for the former dance chart number one this week.

6. Whitney Houston – “One Moment In Time”
Whitney falls another three places this week with the official theme from this year’s Olympic Games.

5. Art of Noise featuring Tom Jones – “Kiss”
After a big new entry last week, Tom and the production duo go up fourteen places this week, beating Prince’s version which made No.6 in the UK!

4. Yazz – “Stand Up For Your Love Rights”
Last weeks highest new entry is up seven places this week giving Yazz her second top 5 hit of her career so far.

3. Milli Vanilli – “Girl You Know It’s True”
Up another seven places this week for Rob and Fab with their high flying, chart busting debut single.

2. Kylie Minogue – “Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi”
Kylie gets a second week at No.2 this week with the fourth single from her debut album that’s back to No.1 on the album chart this week!

1. Enya – “Orinoco Flow”
And a second week on top for County Donegal born Enya who’s album “Watermark” is No.5 on this weeks album chart.
