Thirty years ago: UK top 40 singles chart for Sunday 20th November 1988

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 14th to midnight on Saturday 19th November 1988.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were eight new entry’s, eleven climbers and two non-movers. And it was announced like this…

40. All About Eve – “What Kind Of Fool?”
Falling eleven places this week after just three weeks on the chart for this group with only their second UK top 40 hit.

39. Samantha Fox – “Love House”
New entry from model and singer Samantha with the first release from her forthcoming third studio album.

38. Whitney Houston – “One Moment In Time”
Whitney falls nineteen places this week with the anthem from this year’s Olympic Games in Seoul.

37. Prince – “I Wish U Heaven”
Down thirteen places for Prince and this third single from his No.1 album “Lovesexy”.

36. Erasure – “A Little Respect”
Down sixteen this week for Vince and Andy but they have a brand new single coming out in just one week’s time!

35. The Bangles – “In Your Room”
A new entry last week, and climbing four places this week with the first track taken from their new album “Everything”.

34. Royal House – “Can You Party?”
Down sixteen this week for this dance track that’s been in the top 40 now for six weeks.

33. Angry Anderson – “Suddenly”
New entry for this Australian singer turned actor with the song that was used on last weeks wedding scene in ‘Neighbours’!

32. Womack and Womack – “Life’s Just A Ballgame”
A new entry last week and climbing just one place this week for Cecil and Linda Womack from their album “Conscience”.

31. Sigue Sigue Sputnik – “Success”
Another new entry last week and holding firm this week for this group with a song produced by Stock Aitken Waterman!

30. Stakka – “Stakka Humanoid”
New entry for this techno-dance track that’s already top five on this weeks dance chart.

29. Tanita Tickaram – “Twist In My Sobriety”
After four weeks of climbing Tanita falls seven places this week with her second UK top 40 hit single.

28. D Mob – “We Call It Acieed”
Down eleven places for this former dance chart number one this week from Dancin’ Danny D and Gary Haisman.

27. Mica Paris – “Breathe Life Into Me”
Mica climbs another one place this week with the third single from her debut album “So Good”.

26. Art of Noise and Tom Jones – “Kiss”
Down eleven this week for Tom and The Art of Noise with their version of Prince’s 1986 hit.

25. Hithouse – “Jack To The Sound Of The Underground”
This weeks highest climber goes up thirteen places from last week’s new entry on the top 40.

24. Marillion – “Freaks”
New entry for this Buckinghamshire rock group and a live track from a new live album that’s out next week.

23. The Travelling Wilbury’s – “Handle With Care”
One of last week’s two high climbers falls back two places this week for Bob, Roy, Jeff, Tom and George.

22. Bryan Ferry – “Let’s Stick Together ’88”
Bryan falls eight places this week with his re-released 1976 No.4 hit that made it to No.12 this time around.

21. Tiffany – “Radio Romance”
Another new entry last week and Tiffany goes up twelve places this week with the follow up to “All This Time”.

20. Bananarama – “Nathan Jones”
And another new entry from last week, Sara, Keren and Jacqui get a climb of ten this week with their 12th UK top 20 hit!

19. Bomb The Bass – “Say A Little Prayer”
Tim Simenon is back with this version of Dionne Warwick’s 1967 original and scores his third UK top 20 single this year.

18. Rick Astley – “Take Me To Your Heart”
Another new entry and Rick is back with the second single from his new album that’s called “Hold Me In Your Arms” and it’s out in seven days time!

17. Barbra Streisand and Don Johnson – “Till I Loved You”
Barbra and Don fall one place this week after their joint highest climb last week of sixteen places.

16. Phil Collins – “Two Hearts”
And Phil is back with a new entry with the second single from his film ‘Buster’ and the follow up to his September chart topper “Groovy Kind Of Love”.

15. Robert Palmer – “She Makes My Day”
Robert falls six places this week after three weeks in the top ten with this track from his ninth studio album “Heavy Nova”.

14. Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine – “1-2-3”
Gloria falls four this week with her first UK top ten hit since “Dr. Beat” three years ago!

13. Enya – “Orinoco Flow”
Former number one Enya falls eight places this week, and “Watermark” falls from No.9 to No.20 on this weeks album chart.

12. Michael Jackson – “Smooth Criminal”
A big new entry for Michael this week with the SEVENTH single released from his album “Bad” that’s now sold over 1.5 million copies in the UK!

11. Milli Vanilli – “Girl You Know It’s True”
Rob and Fab fall four places this week and out of the top ten with their debut single. Expect more early in the new year!

10. Kylie Minogue – “Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi”
Kylie is down seven this week with her former 3-week No.2 hit but expect a new single from both her and Jason Donovan in time for Christmas! “Kylie” remains at No.1 this week, however!

9. Brother Beyond – “He Ain’t No Competition”
Another SAW production and falling three places this week for Nathan, Carl, Steve and David.

8. Deacon Blue – “Real Gone Kid”
An amazing turnaround for the band from Glasgow, last week a faller and this week up two places, having previously peaked at No.9 two weeks ago!

7. Pet Shop Boys – “Left To My Own Devices”
This weeks highest new entry is from Neil and Chris with the second single from their third studio album “Introspective”.

6. Iron Maiden – “The Clairvoyant”
Last weeks highest new entry goes up seven places this week and gives the group three consecutive top ten hits now from the “Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son” album!

5. Yazz – “Stand Up For Your Love Rights”
Yazz falls three places this week with her debut solo single all on her own for the first time, but she gets this week’s highest new entry on the album chart at No.3!

4. Salt’N’Pepa – “Twist And Shout”
Big climb this week of eight places for this rapping and singing duo with their second UK top 5 hit, following “Push It” earlier this year.

3. Chris De Burgh – “Missing You”
And up five places this week for Chris with his biggest UK hit since “The Lady In Red” two years ago!

2. Inxs – “Need You Tonight”
The Australian rock group get a climb of two places this week and their biggest UK hit so far. Their Album “Kick” goes up ten places this week to No.19.

1. Robin Beck – “The First Time”
Robin gets a second week at the top with the song from the Coca-Cola TV advert. Can she make it three?…come back next week to find out!
