Thirty years ago: UK top 40 singles chart for Sunday 27th November 1988

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 21st to midnight on Saturday 26th November 1988.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were seven new entry’s, twelve climbers and two non-movers. And it was announced like this…

40. D-Mob – “We Call It Acieed”
Down twelve places this week for dancin’ Danny D with his debut single that formerly topped the dance chart.

39. Tanita Tickaram – “Twist In My Sobriety”
Tanita falls ten places this week with her second single taken from her top ten debut album “Ancient Heart”.

38. Bryan Ferry – “Let’s Stick Together ’88”
Bryan falls sixteen places this week after five weeks in the top 40 with this re-issue of his 1976 top ten hit.

37. Petula Clark – “Downtown ’88”
And another old classic returns to the chart this week, remixed and getting a new entry 24 years after its original release.

36. The Bangles – “In Your Room”
Down one place this week after just three weeks on the chart for The Bangles with their ‘comeback’ single.

35. Womack and Womack – “Life’s Just A Ballgame”
And Cecil and Linda Womack fall three places this week with their second UK top 40 hit this year.

34. Status Quo – “Burning Bridges (On And Off And On Again)”
New entry for The Quo this week with the third single from their album “Ain’t Complaining” and their fourth top 40 hit this year.

33. The Beach Boys – “Kokomo”
Another new entry and a song from the soundtrack of Tom Cruise’s latest movie ‘Cocktail’.

32. Samantha Fox – “Love House”
A new entry last week, Samantha climbs seven places this week with the first single from her new album “I Wanna Have Some Fun” that is out tomorrow!

31. The Pasedenas – “Enchanted Lady”
New entry for this British quintet with the third single release of their career and the follow up to “Riding On A Train”.

30. The Travelling Wilbury’s – “Handle With Care”
Down seven places this week for George, Jeff, Roy, Tom and Bob, with the first track from their album “Volume 1”.

29. Marillion – “Freaks”
New entry last week but falling five places this week for the Fish and the boys.

28. Barbra Streisand and Don Johnson – “Till I Loved You”
Down eleven this week for Barbra and Don with their duet from the musical ‘Goya’.

27. Enya – “Orinoco Flow”
Former number one Enya is down fourteen places this week, perhaps making way for her next single which is out in a couple of weeks time.

26. Mica Paris – “Breathe Life Into Me”
Another climb of one place this week for Mica, now with four weeks on the top 40.

25. Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine – “1-2-3”
Gloria and the boys fall eleven this week with their second UK top 40 hit this year from their hit album “Anything For You”.

24. George Michael – “Kissing A Fool”
New entry from George with the SEVENTH single released from his album “Faith” since last June!

23. Robert Palmer – “She Makes My Day”
Robert falls eight places this week with the third single from his “Heavy Nova” album.

22. Milli Vanilli – “Girl You Know It’s True”
Rob and Fab fall eleven this week with their debut single that has been a chart hit all over Europe.

21. Kylie Minogue – “Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi”
Kylie also falls eleven places this week and she slides one place on this weeks album chart from No.1 to No.2.

20. Iron Maiden – “The Clairvoyant”
Down fourteen places this week for The Maiden and out of the top ten.

19. Bananarama – “Nathan Jones”
The girls climb one place this week with their cover of The Supremes No.5 hit…can they better it?

18. Stakker – “Stakker Humanoid”
New entry last week and climbing twelve places this for this track that’s No.3 on the dance chart.

17. Yazz – “Stand Up For Your Love Rights”
Yazz is down twelve places this week with her first solo single and down to No.7 on the album chart.

16. Angry Anderson – “Suddenly”
This weeks highest climber of seventeen places is the song Charlene walked down the aisle to marry Scott in Neighbours to!

15. Hithouse – “Jack To The Sound Of The Underground”
Last weeks highest climber get another big boost of ten places this week and it’s No.4 on the dance chart.

14. Brother Beyond – “He Ain’t No Competition”
Down five places this week for this group with their second top ten hit of this year.

13. Tiffany – “Radio Romance”
Another good week for Tiffany who climbs eight places and her highest chart position since “I Saw Him Standing There” last April.

12. Rick Astley – “Take Me To Your Heart”
Big new entry last week and Rick climbs six places this week, his new album “Hold Me On Your Arms” is out tomorrow!

11. Deacon Blue – “Real Gone Kid”
A fall of three places this week for this Scottish band with their first UK top 10 hit.

10. Bomb The Bass feat. Maureen – “Say A Little Prayer”
Up nine places this week for Tim and Maureen after they entered last weeks chart and Tim’s third top ten hit this year now.

9. Salt’N’Pepa – “Twist And Shout”
Down five places this week after two weeks of climbing. The Beatles took it to No.2, Salt and Pepa stopped just two short of that.

8. Michael Jackson – “Smooth Criminal”
Up four places this week for MJ and now the sixth UK top 10 single from his “Bad” album that’s up to No.26 on this weeks album chart.

7. Cliff Richard – “Mistletoe And Wine”
Cliff is back and gets a big new entry with his offering for this year’s Christmas number one. Will he succeed…?

6. Phil Collins – “Two Hearts”
Another of last week’s big new entries and up six places this week for Phil with the second top ten hit from his film ‘Buster’.

5. Inxs – “Need You Tonight”
Down three this week for Michael Hutchence and his group with their biggest UK single yet.

4. Pet Shop Boys – “Left To My Own Devices”
Last weeks highest new entry is up three places this week and gives Neil and Chris their ninth UK top ten hit.

3. Chris de Burgh – “Missing You”
Non mover this week for Chris with the lead single from his “Flying Colours” that’s upto No.14 on the album chart.

2. Bros – “Cat Among The Pigeons”
This weeks highest new entry is for Bros with their challenge for the Christmas No.1. “Push” is up eight to No.25 on the album chart.

1. Robin Beck – “The First Time”
Week number three on top for Robin and the Coca-Cola ad song that’s also top five everywhere around Europe. Can she make it four…come back in seven days time to find out!
