What next for this year’s Eurovision finalists?
Russia: Sergey Lazarev
36 year old Sergey Lazarev came third this year for Russia with the song “Scream“, receiving 370 points. His career has already spanned nearly thirty years having joined the group Neposedi in 1991 aged just 8. The group were regular performers on Russian television and in 1997 released their debut single “Let Love Rule The World”. The group is best known for members Yulia Volkova and Lena Katina who would later perform as a duo under the name t.a.T.u!
Lazarev pursued a career in acting after he left the group and graduated from theatre school in 2004. He went on to perform roles on stage in Romeo And Juliet and Karamazov. In 2000 he formed the duo Smash! with Vlad Topalov although they didn’t release their first material till 2003 with the album “Freeway”. After a second album “2Nite” in 2004, Sergey embarked upon a solo career releasing the album “Don’t Be Fake” in 2005 which went on to sell over 300,000 copies in Russia.
His 2007 album “TV Show” includes a cover of Johnny Hates Jazz‘s 1986 hit “Shattered Dreams” which Lazarev took to No.19 in the Russian Charts. Sergey auditioned to represent Russia at the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest with the song “The Flyer” but came fourth in the Russian final. He has certainly been busy releasing a total of 36 singles since 2005, seven of which made the top ten, and seven studio albums!
He again attempted to represent Russia at Eurovision in 2015, this time he was successful, with the song “You Are The Only One”, which came third with 361 votes. He bettered this, if only in points, this year with 370 in total, but still coming third once again. “Scream” is written by American songwriter Sharon Vaughn, who has written songs for Eurovision artists like Jedward and Måns Zelmerlöw as well as Claire Richards and Delta Goodrem, and Greek songwriter and producer Dimitris Kontopoulos, who has previously written seven Eurovision songs for Belarus, Greece, Azerbaijan and “You Are The Only One” for Sergey Lazarev in 2015!
Sergey is performing at The Land Of Legends Theme Park in Turkey on July 19th and with his last studio album “The One” having been released last year, it is expected that his twelfth will follow soon after. Strangely, “Scream” has yet to chart in his homeland. Perhaps that album is more imminent that we think!
