What next for this year’s Eurovision finalists?
San Marino: Serhat
Since entering Eurovision in 2008, San Marino have only qualified twice, in 2014 with “Maybe”, which came twenty fourth and this year with 54 year old Turkish born singer Ahmet Serhat Hacıpaşalıoğlu with his 80’s pastiche track “Say Na Na Na”, which did slightly better in coming nineteenth with 77 points, 65 of those coming from the tele vote!
Serhat can boast of a career spanning a quarter of a century as both a singer, TV presenter and producer and previously brushed with Eurovision in 2016 when he entered with the song “I Didn’t Know”, which failed to qualify that year. Serhat made his name in the 1990’s as a TV producer and presenter, mostly of Turkish game shows including Jeopardy (1994-96) and Connect Four (1996-97). That same year he released his debut single “Rüya-Ben Bir Daha” and has since combined a TV career with an oft-music career. He had a big hit in 2014 with “Je m’adore” which topped dance charts across Europe as well as making No.2 in the UK!
He wrote “Say Na Na Na” with American songwriter Mary Susan Applegate, better known for co-writing Jennifer Rush’s massive 80’s hit “The Power Of Love”, which became an even bigger hit in the 1990’s when Celine Dion recorded it for her 1994 album “The Colour Of My Love”. The single is accompanied by a number of mixes and has so far entered the dance charts around most of Europe.
Just before this year’s Eurovision Contest, Serhat released his debut album “That’s How I Feel”, bringing together most of his hits from the past fifteen years on one album including his 2018 German chart topper “Total Disguise” with Greek singer Elena Paparizou. He also has a number of performances in clubs and festivals this Summer promoting the album and no doubt bringing a smile to everyone’s face with his recent Eurovision triumph!
