We talk exclusively to rising British pop artist Lostchild.
Joe Copplestone aka Lostchild has been writing and releasing solid themes and groovy tunes since he burst onto the music scene in 2016 with his EP “Dancing With Boys”. Lostchild followed this with his second EP “Being Loved When You Know You’re Not Good Enough” in 2017 and his third, “Blacklist” in 2018. Now he has signed to SP Music Management and with a brand new single coming out very soon, we thought it was time to sit down and get to know him more intimately. What makes him tick, what he likes and more importantly, what he knows!
TAPM: You are giving us some great new music but who are your influences?
L: I’m inspired by Robyn and how she merges her emotional honesty with her love of dance music, Madonna for her rule breaking and her fearlessness, George Michael for his journey as one of the first gay pop stars, Sade for the beauty and soul in her music, and Frankmusik for taking control of his career and never giving up.
TAPM: Awesome. So, what was the last song you listened to then?
L: These days I predominantly listen to heavy metal, I rarely listen to pop music anymore! But the last pop song I listened to was “Got My Number” by Kim Petras. Some pop music is so good it just can’t be ignored!
If you’ve never heard of Kim Petras, here she is…
TAPM: We love “Lifeline” – tell us more about it…
L: “Lifeline” is about reaching a cross road in your life, and realising you can either continue down a path of self-destruction in your life or you can choose to change and never look back. I wrote it after I broke up with my boyfriend after cheating on him, and I realised that I had a chance to learn from my mistakes.
TAPM: What about Eurovision – would you ever get involved?
L: It seems like a great opportunity, but I’d worry I’d be typecast as a Eurovision artist. I don’t think it’d be for me.
TAPM: Ok. We love knowing what the number one song in the charts was when people were born – what was yours?
L: Ugh, it was a Wet Wet Wet song. Not a song that I think defined my life!
TAPM: Tell us something embarrassing about yourself…
L: There’s so much about myself I’m embarrassed about, how long have you got? But I’m learning most of it is irrational.
TAPM: What’s your favourite song lyric from one of your songs and why?
L: “You think it’s hard to love, but just you try being loved, when you know you’re not good enough” – S.A.M.
TAPM: Ok and now your favourite songs lyric ever?
L: “Do I know you from somewhere? Why do you leave me wanting more? Why do all the things I say, sound like the stupid things I’ve said before?” – Madonna, Skin
TAPM: Who is the Queen of pop?
L: I guess Beyonce.
TAPM: …and who is the King of pop?
L: I guess Ed Sheeran. Or Drake. Not who I personally listen to but they seem to be the most influential chart wise. My interest in chart music has really waned over the years, and now I just listen to what I want, rather than what the media tells me to listen to.
TAPM: Great. So, what’s the plan for the rest of this year?
L: A joint headline show in Brighton with Ben Davidson on August 16th at The Marlborough which I’m very excited about! Other than that, I’ll be releasing two new Ep’s, 2 new music videos, and hopefully doing a mini US prides tour! It’s been a quiet beginning to the year, but I hope the second half makes up for it!
