Thirty years ago: UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 8th October 1989

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 2nd to Saturday 7th October 1989.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were six new entry’s, ten climbers and four non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Alice Cooper – “Bed Of Nails”
Our first new entry is from Alice Cooper with the follow up to his massive chart hit “Poison”, which only left us two weeks ago. It’s the second song to come from his current album “Trash”.
39. Raul Orellana – “The Real Wild House”
There’s a new entry and a UK chart debut for Italian DJ and producer Raul Orellana, who has been releasing singles for two years, but this week scores his first UK top 40 entry.
38. Jason Donovan – “Everyday”
Jason falls nine places this week with the fifth single from “Ten Good Reasons“, which is now double Platinum certified here, having sold over 600,000 copies! Well done Jason.
37. Bobby Brown – “Rock Wit’cha”
Not such good news for Bobby. he’s down four this week with his fifth single of the year and first not to reach the top twenty.
36. Deborah Harry – “I Want That Man”
Former Blondie singer Debbie Harry returns to the UK chart with this new entry, her first since “French Kissin In The USA” three years ago and the first to come from a brand new album that’s out at the end of the month.
35. Starlight – “Numero Uno”
Starlight have been with us now for nine weeks and have topped the chart for the past five weeks with their other hit “Ride On Time”, this one falls ten places this week and possibly the last week that producers Daniele Davoli, Valerio Semplici and Mirko Limoni can lay claim to two top 40 entries.
34. Tears For Fears – “Sowing The Seeds Of Love”
Kurt and Roland are down eleven places this week with the title track from their new album that went straight into No.1 on last weeks album chart, this week it falls to No.3.
33. The Wedding Present – “Kennedy”
New last week and making their top 40 debut were The Wedding Present, this week they go up one place with that song.
32. Jive Bunny – “Swing The Mood”
Still going strong after thirteen weeks is former chart topper Jive Bunny, but he drops six places this week and one place lower than he entered way back in mid July!
31. The London Boys – “Harlem Desire”
Mixed success for Dennis and Edem this week, they fall tweleve places with their third singles chart hit of the year but climb five places with their album “The Twelve Commandments Of Dance”, up to No.9 on the album chart!
30. Alyson Williams – “I Need Your Loving”
Alyson Williams is down ten places this week and out of the top twenty for the first time in seven weeks with the third single to come from her debut album “My Love Is Raw”.
29. Kate Bush – “The Sensual World”
Also out of the top twenty is Kate Bush with her comeback single, falling fourteen places, her album (of the same name) is out in two weeks time.
28. Cliff Richard – “Lean On You”
Cliff is back, though. He left us just two weeks ago with his 101st single that was produced by Stock Aitken Waterman, this is his 102nd UK single release, and it’s produced by the more familiar Alan Tarney.
27. Aerosmith – “Love In An Elevator”
Aerosmith’s elevator continues to descend to the basement, falling ten ‘floors’ this week and out of the top twenty.
26. Chris Rea – “The Road To Hell”
Chris Rea gets a new entry this week, his first top 40 entry since “On The Beach” last Summer and the first track to come from a brand new album of the same name.
25. Damian – “The Time Warp”
Damian falls twelve places this week, having spent five weeks inside the top twenty and peaking in the top ten with his version of The Rocky Horror Show classic.
24. Karyn White – “Secret Rendezvous”
Not so good either for Karyn White, she slips two places after last weeks big advance forward with her former US top ten hit.
23. Sinitta – “Love On A Mountain Top”
But going in the other direction is Sinitta who climbs nine places following her new entry last week with the second single to come from a new album she has out in two weeks time.
22. Fresh Four – “Wishing On A Star”
Fresh Four debuted last week with this Rose Royce classic, they go up eighteen places and in doing so, get this week’s highest climber!
21. S-Express – “Mantra For A State Of Mind”
Mark Moore’s S-Express remain exactly where they landed last week with their latest track, their second chart hit of this year.
20. Madonna – “Cherish”
Down ten places this week for Madonna with the third single from “Like A Prayer“, it has reached No.2 in The States.
19. Gloria Estefan – “Oye Mi Canto”
Gloria Estefan is down three this week with “Hear My Voice”, her album “Cuts Both Ways” drops one place on the album chart to No.4.
18. Living In A Box – “Room In Your Heart”
But it has been a very good week for Living In A Box, they go up thirteen places and into the top twenty for the second time this year.
17. Sonia – “Can’t Forget You”
And likewise for Sonia too, she returned to the chart last week with her second single and climbs ten places with it this week.
16. Curiosity Killed The Cat – “Name And Number”
No so for Curiosity Killed The Cat, after three week’s progress, they fall back two places with the first single to come from their brand new album “Getahead”.
15. Bros – “Chocolate Box”
Matt and Luke scored last week’s highest new entry but drop out of the top ten this week by six places. It’s their lowest charting single here since “When Will I Be Famous?” was released in December 1987.
14. Belinda Carlisle – “Leave A Light On”
One person who has much to be happy about is Belinda Carlisle, she moves up fourteen places this week and back into the top twenty for the first time since “Circle In The Sand” last Spring. The song is taken from her new album “Runaway Horses“, which is out here in two weeks time!
13. Cher – “If I Could Turn Back Time”
Cher too moves up on this weeks chart, five more places for her with her brand new single from the pen of Diane Warren. Her new album “Heart Of Stone” is out now!
12. Tina Turner – “The Best”
Completing a trio of American female singers is Tina Turner who is down five this week, but doing her very best still on the album chart, as she freezes at No.2 with “Foreign Affair”.
11. Richard Marx – “Right Here Waiting”
While another big US chart hit from Richard Marx falls six this week and it’s out of the top ten for him, for now anyway.
10. Milli Vanilli – “Girl I’m Gonna Miss You”
Rob and Fab can celebrate, they’re back in the UK top ten for the first time in twelve months, up fourteen places this week following their new entry last week.
9. The Beautiful South – “You Keep It All In”
Not so good for The Beautiful South, who drop one place, back to where they were two weeks ago and failing to equal the success they had with “Song For Whoever” back in June.
8. Billy Joel – “We Didn’t Start The Fire”
Last week’s highest climber moves up three more places this week for Billy Joel and into the UK top ten for the first time in six years.
7. Wet Wet Wet – “Sweet Surrender”
Having made good progress last week, Wet Wet Wet slide backwards one place this week with the first single to come from their second album which is titled “Holding Back The River”.
6. Erasure – “Drama”
And the same for Vince and Andy, they go back two places, back to where they came in two weeks ago with the lead single from their new album which will be called “Wild!” and it’s out in one week’s time!
5. Double Trouble and The Rebel MC – “Streets Tuff”
They’re all making way for Double Trouble who returned to the chart last week and climb seven places this week to score their first UK top ten hit!
4. Jive Bunny – “That’s What I Like”
It’s not often an artist has two singles on the top 40, but Jive Bunny can match Starlight/Blackbox this week as ‘he’ registers a second chart hit and this weeks highest new entry at the same time! This one features the theme from Hawaii Five-O, “Let’s Twist Again” and “Good Golly Miss Molly” to name but a few!
3. Sydney Youngblood – “If Only I Could”
Not going anywhere this week is Sydney Youngblood, who rests where he clambered to on last week’s chart, but refusing to budge as one of the three biggest singles in the UK at the moment!
2. Technotronic – “Pump Up The Jam”
As are Technotronic, who remain steadfast in second place for a second week and remain in the same position on this weeks dance chart as well!
1. Blackbox – “Ride On Time”
Which all means that for an unprecedented SIXTH week, Blackbox stay at the top of the UK singles chart – the first single to so since Stevie Wonder’s “I Just Called To Say I Love You” back in 1984! Could they go one further and win a seventh week or will Jive Bunny, Double Trouble or someone else sell a few more copies and strip them of that honour? There is only one way to find that out…
