FRESH: ‘Nostalgia’ – OK Button

OK Button dream of “Nostalgia”.

by Christopher Smith

It’s been a whirlwind year for Scottish dream-pop trio OK Button. Having released four sensational singles to a rapturous reception, the ethereal 3-piece have recently signed to LAB Records. The band have already established themselves as a refreshing new light in indie electronic music with two memorable and much talked about showcases at The Great Escape this year, a short list for the Glastonbury Emerging talent competition, a Scottish Alternative Music award for Best Electronic as well as playing headline dates in London, Aberdeen and Glasgow.

Amber Wilson, Nass Donald and Adam Falkner are the musicians behind the moniker boasting notable past projects. Having met in a Scottish underground music venue, the band was born out of a chance meeting. Amber was performing an acoustic set in her native Aberdeen when Adam fortuitously stumbled upon her gig. The two formed a friendship and began sharing song ideas over email. The process served as a welcome escapism from the loneliness of being on the road with their respective musical projects–Amber as vocalist with Bombay Bicylcle Club and Morcheeba, and Adam as a drummer for One Eskimo and Babyshambles.

The duo teamed up with multi-instrumentalist Nass and writer/producer Craigie Dodds (Amy Winehouse, Gorillaz, Sugababes) and thus the outfit’s dark electronic, dream-pop sound was born. In their latest stunning offering, “Nostalgia”, the band have once again mastered their manipulation of light and shade. Amber Wilson’s warm, whispered vocal is as arresting and emotive as ever, her lyrics softly wrapping themselves around you while the unsettling rumble of the bass in the chorus hints at ghosts lingering from the past. A band who reach in to your soul with the deftest of touches, it’s another deeply moving track that evokes a sense of longing and empowerment all at once.

Speaking on the track, Amber states “Written during a period of feeling completely lost – Nostalgia is a love letter to old friends and my home town of Aberdeen. It’s about coming to terms with change and letting go”. The video was filmed by acclaimed director Milda Baginskaite. Shot entirely during blue hour on location in Formby beach, it’s moody and experimental. Part Sofia Coppola, part Virginia Woolf stream of consciousness, following Amber on a journey through dreamy memories.
