So, what’s new in The Listening Room recently?
‘Quirky’ – Chris Pidsley
Chris Pidsley is a young singer-songwriter based in London. Playing acoustic based pop and alternative style songs as well as electric guitar lead melodies.
Pidsley originally comes from Gloucestershire and began playing guitar when he was 11. He first started writing songs at 16 and would play them at local school events. After moving to Plymouth for university at 19, Pidsley honed his song writing skills and began to play numerous open mics around the city and University, as well as busking where he could.
Taking inspiration from his own life, Pidsley’s lyrics are powerfully honest and marry well with his unique vocals. Inspired by such artists as Newton Faulkner as well as Tom Misch and Honne, Pidsley has now played numerous venues around the London area including the Camden Assembly and Spice of Life to a warm reception. He plays a mixture of his own original material as well as popular covers in his own unique style. Currently new on the scene, Pidsley has had his song “Leave Me Behind” appear on BBC Introducing Devon and has also recorded with the popular Royal William Yard sessions in 2017.
Pidsley is hoping to record his first as yet untitled EP in the coming year.
‘Little Things’ – Say Anise
Say Anise, aka Emily Barnett, is a folk/pop singer-songwriter from London, whose inspirations range from the 60s/70s California folk scene to more contemporary acts such as the London band Flyte and American singer-songwriter Anais Mitchell.
She has spent the last few years gigging extensively in London and further afield. It was during this period of gigging in London that she met and started playing with her current band (all singer-songwriters themselves). This collaborative approach has had a huge impact on her music; in fact “Little Things” is a collaboration in itself. It was co-written with her bandmate/flatmate and friend Adrien Latgé and recorded by friend of the band Julien Baraness at Mattison Studio.
Emily can currently be found putting on live streams in her living room with her boyfriend and fellow singer-songwriter Brian Grogan.
‘Hold Me Closer’ – Little Diner
Little Diner is a lofi indie-pop trio based out of San Francisco, Pacifica, and Chicago. With their warm and intimate sound, Little Diner specializes in creating feelings of closeness and connection. Their first single, “Hold Me Closer” was released in April 2020.
‘Smaller Than This’ – Sara Kays
Singer/songwriter Sara Kays captivates listeners through honest, heartbreaking stories inspired by her childhood and struggles with body image. Sara discovered her love for singing in her early teens, and a bigger love for songwriting soon after. In high school, she played a countless number of gigs in her Midwest hometown while shaping her sound that would eventually land somewhere between singer/songwriter and pop. Longing to get out of the Midwest, Sara made the move out to Music City in 2018 where her skills have since been pushed to the next level. Currently, Sara is releasing singles while writing and recording her next project.
‘Resolution Sunrise’ – Michael Aaron
Michael Aaron is an American singer-songwriter from Long Island, New York. Inspired by music icons from past decades, Aaron projects a familiar, but new sound, while bringing back the lyrical tellings of the classic American singer-songwriter.
