UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 12th July 1987
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 6th to Saturday 11th July 1987.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, there were seven new entrys, eleven climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Samantha Fox – “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Me Now”
Samantha Fox accumulates two months on the chart – just, with her biggest hit for two years, which slides seventeen places.
39. U2 – “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”
U2’s latest has been about for one week less than Sam and is also down, but only ten places for them.
38. Boy George – “Sold”
Boy George hits back quickly with the third single from his debut solo album of the same name, quickly following “Keep Me In Mind” into the top 40.
37. The Gap Band – “Oops Up Side Your Head”
Back in 1979/80, this song was big around the world and reached No.6 here for The Gap Bad, a re-release of it sees it re-enter the UK top 40, so let’s see how high it goes this time around…
36. Simple Minds – “Promised You A Miracle” (live)
Simple Minds’ live version of this 1982 top twenty hit is down eleven places this week from their number one live album, “Live In The City Of Light”.
35. Luther Vandross – “I Really Didn’t Mean It”
Luther Vandross is back in the UK chart with another single from his “Give Me The Reason” album. This one is the fourth but only the third to make the top 40.
34. Hue And Cry – “Labour Of Love”
Brothers Pat and Greg Kane started writing music together over five years ago and have only recently begun to record what they have. They released two singles last year and this third is the first to make the top 40.
33. Johnny Logan – “Hold Me Now”
Ireland’s Eurovision winner Johnny Logan drops out of the top twenty and down thirteen this week with his winning entry.
32. Los Lobos – “La Bamba”
Los Lobos is Spanish for The Wolves. This American band have been together for a decade now and released a number of singles and albums, but without too much success so far. That all changes this week with this cover of an old Ritchie Valens song from 1958 which comes from a film of the same name and gives them their first UK chart hit.
31. Prince – “If I Was Your Girlfriend”
Prince’s latest single from the “Sign O’The Times” album is down seven places this week as he gains a fifth week inside the top 40.
30. Starship – “Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now”
Fifteen weeks on and the year’s biggest seller, so far, is still on the chart and it’s only down two places this week as well for Starship and all their mannequins!
29. George Michael – “I Want Your Sex”
taking a bigger fall is George Michael with his latest offering, which leaves the upper part of the chart, down ten places.
28. Bananarama – “I Heard A Rumour”
Bananarama have recently regrouped with producers Stock Aitken Waterman to write and record new music and this is the first of those songs to be released and it gives them a big new entry this week and their highest charting single since “Venus”, with the boys, last year!
27. The Cure – “Catch”
The Cure’s current single from their seventh studio album, which is their highest charting to date, is up three places in week two.
26. Broken English – “Comin’ On Strong”
Eight weeks on and Broken English’s debut single keeps going although strong is not the word to use as threy leave the top twenty, down eight places.
25. Kenny G – “Songbird”
US instrumentalist Kenny G made his first appearance on the UK chart last week and climbs seven places, seven days later.
24. Genesis – “Throwing It All Away”
Backtracking two places are Genesis with the fifth single from their last album, which becomes the first not to reach the top twenty.
23. Freddie McGregor – “Just Don’t Wanna Be Lonely”
Freddie McGregor’s first UK charting single after a decade as a recording artist has a great second week as he shoots up fourteen places.
22. ABC – “When Smokey Sings”
ABC are down eight places and leave the top twenty where they’ve been for the past five weeks with their latest tune, which is the first from a new album they are currently completing.
21. The Christians – “Hooverville”
The Christians are up in their third week on the chart as the third single from their self-titled debut album rises six more places.
20. Chris Rea – “Let’s Dance”
Chris Rea is still dancing away in the top twenty for a fifth week with his biggest hit for three years, even though he falls seven places.
19. Whitesnake – “Is This Love?”
Whitesnake’s biggest chart hit ever also spends a fifth week in the top twenty but they drop eight places with the third single from their current album.
18. Billy Idol – “Sweet Sixteen”
Shame Billy Idol didn’t make the chart position in his latest song title as he came so close last week but drops back one this week.
17. John Farnham – “You’re The Voice”
The former Australian number one from John Farnham leaves the top ten, down eight places this week, notching up ten whole weeks on the UK top 40.
16. Curiosity Killed The Cat – “Misfit”
Curiosity Killed The Cat also leave the big ten, down six places with the third single from their chart topping debut album.
15. Jackie Wilson – “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher”
Last week’s highest climber keeps lifting the last Jackie Wilson ever higher as he goes up just six places this week and seeking a third top ten hit this time next week…
14. Boogie Box High – “Jive Talkin'”
From last week’s to this week’s highest climber and the all star recording of the Bee Gees former disco number is up seventeen places looking to emulate the original’s chart high, eight years ago.
13. Shakin Stevens – “A Little Boogie Woogie”
Shakey also has a good week with his first release from a forthcoming cover versions album. His recording of Gary Glitter’s 1977 hit is up thirteen places.
12. Whitney Houston – “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”
Whitney’s former number one leave the top ten this week, down four places as she prepares to release her second studio album here, simply called “Whitney”!
11. Cliff Richard – “My Pretty One”
And down come Cliff Richard as well with his latest and newest single as he falls five places and out of the big ten after three weeks there.
10. The Firm – “Star Trekkin'”
The star trek crew and The Firm are making their way back to Earth this week as their former number one flies seven galaxies closer.
9. Heart – “Alone”
Mean time, US rock band Heart are up six places and into the UK top ten for the very first time with this single that was released last year in their home country.
8. Black – “Sweetest Smile”
Another first top ten hit comes from British band Black aka frontman Colin Vearncombe as their first chart entry is four places higher this week.
7. Mel and Kim – “F.L.M.”
Sister act Mel and Kim are back in the top ten for a third time with last week’s highest new entry which is up nine places , one of three Stock Aitken Waterman songs on this weeks chart and the highest.
6. a-ha – “The Living Daylights”
The fifteenth James Bond film is out now and he really is trying to scare the living daylights out of everyone he comes into contact with. Sadly that doesn’t extend to a-ha‘s title theme, which falls back one place this week.
5. Atlantic Starr – “Always”
Atlantic Starr continue to improve on their best UK charting single again this week as they move into the top five with a climb of two places.
4. Terence Trent D’Arby – “Wishing Well”
A non-mover is Terence Trent D’Arby with his second top ten hit, which is still his best chart placing to date as he secures a second week in the top five.
3. Madonna – “Who’s That Girl?”
Madonna will be back on the silver screen later this month with her new movie, ‘Who’s That Girl?’, and this is the title song from the soundtrack which gives her the highest new entry this week and her third top three hit of this year, so far!
2. Bruce Willis – “Under The Boardwalk”
Frustration for actor Bruce Willis this week as his best charting song so far doesn’t sell enough for the top seat and is a non-mover in second place for a second week.
1. Pet Shop Boys – “It’s A Sin”
Which means for a third week, Chris and Neil claim that prize as the biggest seller of all with their newest and biggest song yet. But will they manage a whole month, or will Madonna, Atlantic Starr or Mel and Kim knock them off? There’s only one way to find out…
