Eurovision Song Contest 2016: Austria – “Loin d’ici” By Zoë

zoe (1)Eurovision 2016 is almost upon us and as the countries begin to reveal their entries let’s start giving them the once-over. The Austria song is called “Loin d’ici” and is performed by Zoë.

ARTIST

Zoë Straub was born in the Austrian capital, Vienna, to musician parents, Christof Straub and Roumina Straub (née Wilfling), on 1 December 1996.

At the age of six, she featured in a song by her parents’ musical project, Papermoon, called “Doop Doop (Baby Remix)”.[1] In 2007, Straub participated in the Austrian reality singing competition Kiddy Contest, where she covered “Engel ohne Flügel”, originally performed by Nicole, while she was attending Lycée français de Vienne(French Highschool of Vienna), where she studied for nine years.

Straub appeared on ORF television series Vorstadtweiber in 2015. She also competed in the Austrian national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2015, where she eventually placed third with the song “Quel filou”, written by Straub herself and her father, Christof Straub. She performed live at Rathausplatz while Vienna was serving as the host city of Eurovision Song Contest 2015. In October 2015, she released her début album Debut.

OPINION

Nice staging, if not another copy of last year’s winner. The song itself has a nice hook and I always love songs that aren’t sung in English so it’s nice to hear the French accent here. As for Zoe, it seems she’s been taking fashion advice from Molly but that’s no bad thing either. The song kind of takes you on a nice, magical journey and the more I listen to this the more I love it!

PREDICTION

I can definitely see this qualify and I think it’s a real contender in the Top Five.

LYRICS

“And when you sing, yes, I will sing, too
When you spurt ahead, I will follow
And when you fly, yes, I will fly, too
If you spurt ahead, I will follow you

In a country far from here
Searching for paradise
In a country far from here
We sing, we sing

In a country far from here
Searching for paradise
In a country far from here
We sing

And when the road seems to be a dead end for us
Without a doubt, I will follow you
Without a doubt, even if we were lost
Without a doubt, I will follow you

In a country far from here
Searching for paradise
In a country far from here
We sing, we sing

In a country far from here
Searching for paradise
In a country far from here
We sing, we sing

We sing and we dance and we laugh
We spurt ahead, together
Drunken, carelessly

In a country far from here
Searching for paradise
In a country far from here
We sing, we sing

In a country far from here
Searching for paradise
In a country far from here
We sing, we sing

(In a country far from here) In a country
(Searching for paradise) Paradise
(In a country far from here) In a country
We sing, we sing

(In a country far from here)
We sing, we sing, we dance, we dance
(Searching for paradise) In a country

(In a country far from here)
We sing, we sing, we dance, we dance
(We sing) Far from here

(Far from here)
(Searching for paradise)
(In a country far from here)
(We sing) We sing”

Good luck Zoe!
