Eurovision Song Contest 2017: Italy – “Occidentali’s Karma” By Francesco Gabbani

Eurovision Song Contest 2017: Italy -

Eurovision 2017 – Italy

The Italy song is called “Occidentali’s Karma” and performed by Francesco Gabbani.

ARTIST

Francesco Gabbani was chosen during the live San Remo music festival on February 11th where a total of 16 artists performed. Singer/songwriter Francesco was born in Carrara in 1982, he debuted at the Festival last year winning the Newcomers’ category and also won the critics’ prize with ‘Amen’. His histrionic lyrics and stage presence immediately become a favourite of the public.

SONG

‘Occidental Karma’ was the only song this year that presented a dance routine, and it’s an ironic reflection on the attraction that Western people have for the spirituality of oriental cultures.

OPINION

I LOVE IT!

I have to say this is probably the first time I’ve seen anyone perform with a gorilla suit! That aside, it’s quite a catchy tune and he has a nice huskiness to his voice. It’s definitely growing on me – so much so that I am practising the dance moves and considering buying a kimono or a gorilla suit – or maybe even both!

I can’t wait so watch this live in Kyiv! My only negative is that the ‘cut down Eurovision’ version makes me feel like I’m losing out on the awesomeness of this song!

PREDICTION

Could this be ‘Italy’s year’. Abso-fucking-lutely!

LYRICS

English

‘To Be or To Have to Be –
Hamlet’s doubt
As current as the Neolithic man.
In you’re 2×3 cage, get comfy.
Highbrows in cafés,
Internet experts,
Honorary members of the selfie-addicted anonymous
Cleverness is out of fashion,
Easy answers,
Pointless dilemmas.

AAA grand endings wanted
hoped,
Whatever happens, panta rhei*
And Singing in the rain.

Chorus:
Nirvana lessons
There’s Buddha in single line,
recreation time for everyone, a moment of glory.
The crowd is shouting a mantra,
Evolution stumbles,
The naked monkey is dancing
Westerners’ karma,
Westerners’ karma,
The naked monkey is dancing,
Westerners’ karma.

Drops of Chanel are pouring,
On aseptic bodies,
Save yourself from the smell of your counterparts.
All know-all with the web,
The people’s cocaine,
The poor’s opiate.

AAA virtual humanity wanted,
Sex appeal,
Whatever happens, panta rhei*
And Singing in the rain.

Chorus:
Nirvana lessons
There’s Buddha in single line,
recreation time for everyone, a moment of glory.
The crowd is shouting a mantra,
Evolution stumbles,
The naked monkey is dancing
Westerners’ karma,
Westerners’ karma,
The naked monkey is dancing,
Westerners’ karma.

When life is distracted,
Men drop.
Westerners’ karma,
Westerners’ karma,
The monkey raises.
Namaste, alé!

Nirvana lessons
There’s Buddha in single line,
recreation time for everyone, a moment of glory.
The crowd is shouting a mantra,
Evolution stumbles,
The naked monkey is dancing
Westerners’ karma,
Westerners’ karma,
The naked monkey is dancing,
Westerners’ karma’

Italian

‘Essere o dover essere –
il dubbio amletico
contemporaneo come l’uomo del Neolitico.
Nella tua gabbia 2×3 mettiti comodo.
Intellettuali nei caffè,
internettologi,
soci onorari al gruppo dei selfisti anonimi.
L’intelligenza è démodé,
risposte facili,
dilemmi inutili.

A.A.A. cercasi (cerca, sì)
storie dal gran finale,
sperasi, (spera, sì)
comunque vada, panta rei
and singing in the rain.

Ritornello:
Lezioni di Nirvana,
c’è il Buddha in fila indiana,
per tutti un’ora d’aria, di gloria.
La folla grida un mantra,
l’evoluzione inciampa,
la scimmia nuda balla;
occidentali’s karma,
occidentali’s karma,
la scimmia nuda balla,
occidentali’s karma.

Piovono gocce di Chanel
su corpi asettici,
mettiti in salvo dall’odore dei tuoi simili.
Tutti tuttologi col web,
coca dei popoli,
oppio dei poveri.

A.A.A. cercasi, (cerca, sì)
umanità virtuale,
sex appeal, (sex appeal)
comunque vada, panta rei
and singing in the rain.

Ritornello:

l’evoluzione inciampa,
la scimmia nuda balla,
occidentali’s karma,
occidentali’s karma,
la scimmia nuda balla,
occidentali’s karma.’
