UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 15th May 1988
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 9th to Saturday 14th May 1988.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were six new entry’s, thirteen climbers and NO non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. James Brown – “The Payback Mix – Part 1”
James Brown falls a mighty twenty places this week as he leaves the top twenty and very nearly, the top 40 altogether.
39. Joyce Sims – “Walk Away”
Joyce Sims is also going down, but just twelve places for her with her second top 40 hit of this year.
38. Kim Wilde – “Hey Mister Heartache”
Kim Wilde, however, is back in the UK chart with a brand new song and a brand new entry. It’s her first top 40 entry since her Comic Relief ‘duet’ with Mel Smith last year on “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” and this song is the first to come from a new album that’s due next month.
37. Climie Fisher – “This Is Me”
Simon and Rob are also back, after dropping out two weeks ago with their biggest hit yet. Can they make it three top ten hits in a row with this new entry?
36. The Christians – “Born Again”
Unfortunately, The Christians peaked last week with the follow up to “Ideal World”, which goes down eleven this week.
35. Billy Ocean – “Calypso Crazy”
Billy Ocean went “Calypso Crazy” when he got a new entry on last week’s chart and makes a climb of four places this week.
34. LA Mix – “Check This Out”
LA Mix are actually a British group who formed last year and released their debut single, which stalled just short of the top 40. Not so their second, which gives them a new entry already their biggest chart hit so far.
33. Magnum – “Start Talking Love”
Magnum’s second single has already been their second to make the top 40 but alas it’s going down this week, eleven places.
32. Fleetwood Mac – “Everywhere”
Fleetwood Mac continue to “be with you everywhere”, even though they’re down eleven this week in their eighth week on the chart.
31. Scritti Politti – “Oh Patti (Don’t Feel Sorry For Lover Boy)”
Gart Greenside is the frontman of Scritti Politti and three years ago they scored a top ten hit with “The Word Girl”. Three years later, here comes their next top 40 entry, which is the lead single from their forthcoming fourth studio album.
30. Mica Paris – “My One Temptation”
Chart debut time now for British singer Mica Paris who enters the big 40 with her debut single. Mica was born in London and previously sang with The Spirit of Watts gospel choir prior to single backing vocals on UK band Hollywood Beyond’s debut album, “If…”, two years ago.
29. Patrick Swayze and Wendy Fraser – “She’s Like The Wind”
Patrick and Wendy do down five places this week with their ‘Dirty Dancing’ duet, the third song from the soundtrack album to chart here.
28. Pet Shop Boys – “Heart”
Chris and Neil are down ten this week with their former number one, which followed their Christmas chart topper with “Always On My Mind”.
27. Debbie Gibson – “Out Of The Blue”
Debbie Gibson made her third UK chart appearance last week with the title track of her debut album, which goes up ten places this week.
26. George Michael – “One More Try”
While George is down seven with the fourth single to come from his debut album, “Faith”.
25. Ofra Haza – “Im Nin’alu”
Israel’s Ofra Haza made her UK chart debut last week with a song that has its roots in 1979 but was released as a single in her home land in 1984 and she’s had a good week here with a climb of thirteen places.
24. Will Downing – “A Love Supreme”
Will Downing leaves the top twenty with a drop of seven places this week with his UK top 40 debut.
23. Pat and Mick – “Let’s All Chant”
And also leaving the top twenty are Pat and Mick with their charity single Helping A London Child with the help of Stock Aitken Waterman, down nine this week.
22. The Hothouse Flowers – “Don’t Go”
Hothouse Flowers are an Irish group who released their debut single last year. This is the follow up and it breaks them here in the UK, even more so as they are this week’s highest new entry!
21. Star Turn On 45 Pints – “Pump Up The Bitter”
Stop pouring as Star Turn on seem to of drunk more than 45 pints this week with a fall of nine places that takes them out of the top twenty.
20. The Adventures – “Broken Land”
The Adventures have ‘broken’ into the top twenty this week with a climb of three places, their fourth week of positive movement.
19. Heart – “What About Love?”
Also breaking into the top twenty are Heart, but for the fourth time, with the follow up to “Never/These Dreams” and bagging this weeks highest climb of twenty one places.
18. The Jackson 5 – “I Want You Back ’88”
The Jacksons are down eight this week with the remix of their 1969 debut, courtesy of Phil Harding and Ian Curnow, better known for their association with Stock Aitken Waterman!
17. Aztec Camera – “Somewhere In My Heart”
Another song wit a big climb this week comes from Aztec Camera who are up sixteen places and back in the top twenty for only the second time, five years after “Oblivious” reached No.18.
16. Derek B – “Bad Young Brother”
Derek B is keeping consistent with a climb of ten this week to give him his second UK top twenty hit single.
15. Natalie Cole – “Pink Cadillac”
While Natalie Cole is down just four places this week with her first and certainly her biggest UK hit single so far.
14. Prefab Sprout – “The King Of Rock and Roll”
Another band making their top twenty debut this week are Prefab Sprout who move up fourteen places with, what is now, their biggest chart hit single.
13. Hazell Dean – “Who’s Leaving Who?”
…or maybe who’s leaving the top ten this week?(!) Sadly it’s Hazell Dean, with her biggest hit yet, which falls five places and out.
12. Belinda Carlisle – “Circle In The Sand”
In a week with some big movers, Belinda Carlisle does her bit with a climb of nineteen places with her third UK top 40 entry which, I am sure, could become her third UK top ten hit next week…
11. Prince – “Alphabet Street”
Prince returned to the top ten last week but it was only for seven days as this week he falls back two places to just outside the ten best sellers.
10. Danny Wilson – “Mary’s Prayer”
Danny Wilson are top ten for a fifth week with their first chart hit, even though they are down three places.
9. Bananarama – “I Want You Back”
So are Bananarama, who follow them down three places, now the only “I Want You Back” left in the top ten after The Jackson 5’s exit this week.
8. Narada – “Divine Emotions”
It’s been another superb week for Narada (Michael Walden), who not only climbs eight places, but is back in the UK top ten for the first time in ten years!
7. S-Express – “Theme From S-Express”
The S-Express crew are down five places this week with their former chart topping debut single – the countdown is counting down!
6. Harry Enfield – “Loadsamoney”
And down too for last week’s highest climber from Harry Enfield, out of the top five and two places lower that seven days ago.
5. New Order – “Blue Monday ’88”
Also dropping two places are New order with the 1988 reboot of their 1983 hit, which has charted higher second time round, nevertheless.
4. Kylie Minogue – “Got To Be Certain”
Kylie Minogue returned to the UK chart for a second time last week with her follow up to “I Should Be So Lucky”, which is up eleven this week and gives her a second top five hit out of two singles released.
3. Liverpool FC – “The Anfield Rap”
Going up ten places are Liverpool Football Club with their ‘rap’, even if they lost 1-0 to Wimbledon! Unlucky on the pitch, lucky in the charts!
2. Fairground Attraction – “Perfect”
Sadly, after one week on top with their debut single, Fairground Attraction step back one place, perhaps that’s mot a ‘perfect’ thing to happen…?
1. Wet Wet Wet – “With A Little Help From My Friends”
So we have a new number one, and congratulations to Wet Wet Wet who were last week’s highest new entry and go up four places to get their first chart topper and it’s all to help Childline. But can they stay there for a second week, or will Liverpool score a goal or Kylie claim her second chart topper of the year? There’s only one way to find out…
