Madonna - Like A Virgin

REVIEW: ‘Like A Virgin’ – Madonna

Queen Of Pop, Madonna, is hopefully releasing new music this year so let’s take this opportunity to look back at Madge’s awesome career.

After the release of her self-titled debut album, Madonna wanted to solidify her future in the music business, by building on the success of the first album. She decided to become one of the record producers, but Warner Bros. was not ready to give her the artistic freedom that she wanted.

Like A Virgin” debuted at number 74 on the UK Albums Chart, on January 12, 1985. However, the album fluctuated on the chart for the next eight months and it was only in September that it finally reached the top of the chart.

1 – Material Girl

What a way to open the album! Trying to be a “bitch version” of Marilyn Monroe – go Madge!

2 – Angel

After the brilliant first track this brings you down to Earth with an almighty bump. It’s hard to believe that this was released as a single with “Into The Groove” as the B side! On the reissue of the album I’m glad that “Into The Groove” was included.

3 – Like A Virgin

The title track and – what a track. Let the causing of the controversy begin. This song definitely help make Madonna an icon.

4 – Over And Over

I would consider myself to be quite the Madonna fan but I don’t think I’ve ever heard this song before and this will probably be the one and only time I listen to it.

5 – Love Don’t Live Here Anymore

I think this song is trying to prove that Madonna can sing “normal” songs too. It does allow us to see her in a different light. Oh yeah, and someone shut the doors – it’s a bit blowy outside!

6 – Dress You Up

I used to think this song was about playing with dolls or something but apparently the lyrics are an extended metaphor for fashion and sex, comparing dressing up with passion. It was added to the “Filthy Fifteen” list of the Parents Music Resource Center, due to the perceived sexual nature of its lyrics. Who knew?

7 – Shoo-Bee-Doo

What a really lovely semi-ballad. When you don’t know what words to say – just say “Shoo-Bee-Doo”!

8 – Pretender

I’m sensing that all the best songs on the album were before this one. I could be wrong – we’ll see what the last track brings, it might prove me wrong.

9 – Stay

This is an okay song but I certainly wouldn’t end the album with it. Leave them wanting more I always say!

What are your Madonna memories?
