Thirty years ago: UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 29th October 1989

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 23rd to Saturday 28th October 1989.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were five new entry’s, eleven climbers and four non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Brother Beyond – “Drive On”
Our first new entry is a chart return for Brother Beyond with a brand new track, the first since their run of top thirty hits from last Summer till April this year.
39. Level 42 – “Take Care Of Yourself”
New last week but going nowhere this week are Level 42 with the first new track from their forthcoming greatest hits album “Level Best”.
38. Arthur Baker featuring Al Green – “The Message Is Love”
Also new last week were Arthur and Al, but they climb up two places with their joint ‘message of love’.
37. Sinitta – “Love On A Mountain Top”
Going the other way is Sinitta with her latest chart hit, but down eleven places this week.
36. Fish – “State Of Mind”
As is former Marillion singer Fish who entered last weeks chart but slips four places this week.
35. The Beautiful South – “You Keep It All In”
Down fifteen this week go The Beautiful South with their second top 40 hit, BUT, their debut album “Welcome To The Beautiful South” is this weeks highest new entry in at No.2!
34. Raul Orellana – “The Real Wild House”
And Raul Orellana sadly falls back five places this week with his UK chart debut, which has also reached the top ten on the dance chart.
33. Erasure – “Drama”
Vince and Andy are down six this week, but I’m sure they’re not too worried, as they still have the biggest selling album in the UK for a second week in a row!
32. Tina Turner – “The Best”
Tina has done her best for ten weeks now on the singles chart, but she falls eight places this week. Her album “Foreign Affair” is out of the album chart top ten this week too.
31. Transvision Vamp – “Born To Be Sold”
But returning for a fourth time this year are Transvision Vamp with this new entry taken from their recent number one album “Velveteen”.
30. Curiosity Killed The Cat – “Name And Number”
Curiosity are down eight this week with the first single from their new album “Getahead” that’s in at No.29 on the album chart this week.
29. Jive Bunny – “Swing The Mood”
Yet again, Jive Bunny is going back up the chart! Down last week, up the week before, down before that…and up four this week back into the top thirty! Can he hold the number one though for a third week this week…?
28. Oh Well – “Oh Well”
Oh Well, with their debut and ‘signature’ tune, get a non mover this week, staying put and doing no better or no worse than last week.
27. Queen – “Scandal”
Queen drop two places this week with their fourth top 40 single of the year so far and the second song from the film of the same name.
26. The Beloved – “The Sun Rising”
Making their debut last week were The Beloved and they do get some great news, as they go up eleven places this week.
25. Wet Wet Wet – “Sweet Surrender”
Falling seven this week and out of the top twenty are Wet Wet Wet, their new album “Holding Back The River” is out tomorrow!
24. Cliff Richard – “Lean On You”
Cliff drops just three this week with the third single to come from his new album “Stronger”, which is also out tomorrow.
23. The Mixmaster – “Grand Piano”
‘The Mixmaster’ is 21 year old Italian DJ Gino Latino who gets a new entry for the first time on the UK top 40, having already charted twice in his home country already this year.
22. Phil Collins – “Another Day In Paradise”
Phil Collins is back after his hugely successful film ‘Buster‘ and its accompanying soundtrack album. He gets a new entry with the first track to come from a brand new studio album that will be out next month.
21. D-Mob featuring Cathy Dennis – “C’mon Get My Love”
Danny D and Cathy Dennis rise another two places this week with their collaboration, while Danny is helping Cathy to develop as a singer in her own right. Expect new music from her early next year!
20. Sybil – “Don’t Make Me Over”
Sybil falls one place this week with her version of Dionne Warwick’s 1963 classic, but remains inside the top twenty for a second week…just!
19. Luther Vandross – “Never Too Much ’89”
Luther returned with his 1981 debut last week and by going up twelve places, he becomes this week’s highest climber, back into the top twenty for the first time with this song in eight years!
18. Adeva – “I Thank You”
Adeva slips one place this week with her third top twenty hit of this year and her career so far. Her debut album is down to No.14 this week.
17. Kylie Minogue – “Never Too Late”
Kylie is back in the chart after a few weeks away, she bags this week’s highest new entry with the third single to come from her recent number one album “Enjoy Yourself“, which sits at No.3 this week.
16. Fresh Four – “Wishing On a Star”
The Fresh Four drop five this week with their version of Rose Royce’s 1978 smash hit, the fourth so far and the highest charting since the original.
15. Sydney Youngblood – “If Only I could”
Sydney Youngblood exits the top ten for the first time in eight weeks, he’s down five this week but still going strong with his first UK chart hit.
14. De La Soul – “Eye Know”
De La Soul continue to forge ahead with their biggest UK chart hit so far, up two places this week, the third single released from their debut album “3 Feet High And Rising”.
13. Deborah Harry – “I Want That Man”
Debbie Harry continues to climb the chart, up once place this week, with the first single to come from her new album “Def, Dumb And Blonde”.
12. Martika – “I Feel The Earth Move”
Just as last week’s highest climber from Martika moves up three more spots this week with her second UK chart hit in three months.
11. Technotronic – “Pump Up The Jam”
Technotronic fall three places this week and out of the top ten for the first time in six weeks.
10. Chris Rea – “The Road To Hell”
Chris climbs two this week and moves into the UK top ten for the first time ever! His album of the same name is out tomorrow!
9. Blackbox – “Ride On Time”
The massive former six week chart topper from Blackbox drops four places this week, its eleventh week in the top ten!
8. Billy Joel – “We Didn’t Start The Fire”
Billy’s going back up the chart one place this week after a fall last week, his album “Storm Front” goes in at No.5.
7. Cher – “If I Could Turn Back Time”
Cher falls one though this week with a song that’s made No.3 Stateside. Her album “Heart Of Stone” moves up to No.15 this week.
6. Belinda Carlisle – “Leave A Light On”
And Belinda Carlisle slips back two places this week, I’m sure she isn’t too bothered as her album “Runaway Horses” is a new entry at No.4 on the album chart this week!
5. Living In A Box – “Room In Your Heart”
But still on the rise are Living In A Box, who go up two this week and equal the position held by their self-titled debut single back in early 1987! Can they make it their biggest yet…?
4. Double Trouble and The Rebel MC – “Streets Tuff”
After yo-yoing back up the chart last week, Double Trouble and their mate go back down this week, just one place though.
3. Lisa Stansfield – “All Around The World”
Someone who is celebrating is Lisa Stansfield. She was last week’s highest new entry and goes up ten places this week to claim her highest UK chart place yet!
2. Milli Vanilli – “Girl I’m Gonna Miss You”
Meanwhile, Rob and Fab hold on to the position they landed at last week, their highest UK top 40 placing so far.
1. Jive Bunny – “That’s What I Like”
So Jive Bunny reigns supreme for a third week at the top with his follow up to the song at No.29. I can see a pattern forming here, so will he win a fourth or could Lisa, Living In A Box or someone else deprive him of that? There’s only one way to find out…
