FRESH: ‘The Real Life’ – Suzi Island

Alt-pop trio Suzi Island release their latest track “The Real Life”.

by Christopher Smith

Brighton’s alt-pop trio Suzi Island are steadily building their reputation on the back of early singles “Show Me The Way”, “Actor” and “Halo”. Now they drop their most accomplished moment to date with the new single “The Real Life”, which they previewed in session for BBC Introducing.

“The Real Life” unites a live band’s irrepressible power with a dynamic electro-pop production in a way that recalls the song-craft of Kodaline and One Republic with the youthful energy of New Hope Club. The track was produced by former Vaccines drummer Pete Robertson who they also worked with on “Show Me The Way”.

Featuring friends and flatmates Hugh Reilly-Smith (vocals/guitar), Matt Carter (bass) and Carlie Randall (keys), Suzi Island have demonstrated near limitless potential in their career to date. Constantly evolving their sound, they can be whatever they want to be. Their immediacy later reveals hidden layers and their rich gift for melody is matched by their insistent rhythmic propulsion. They can energise a crowd or inspire a moment of introspection. Collectively they’re inspired by the unrestricted creativity and pop nous of twenty one pilots, Everything Everything and The 1975.

Already winning the support of new music champions such as Abbie McCarthy, who booked them to play her Good Karma Club, Suzi Island also feature on the soundtrack to Pro Evolution Soccer 2019. Their track “Actor” also reached a huge nationwide audience when it was played during half-time at last summer’s England v Sweden World Cup quarter-final.
