THE EASTER STORY: Manchester! Music! Passion!

The Easter Story – Manchester Style

Can you combine the religious aspect of the Easter story, music and the city of Manchester?

Yes, you can and it was done in an awesome way in 2006 that, in my opinion, has never had the recognition it deserved.

BBC Three marked Easter 2006 with a major event broadcast live from the streets of Manchester, which saw Jesus singing Joy Division and Judas using the words of Morrissey.

Manchester Passion was a contemporary retelling of the last days of Jesus’ life using popular music from the cream of Manchester bands, including Joy Division, New Order, The Smiths, Oasis and M People.

The major Good Friday event –  shown live on BBC Three – included a procession of the cross through the city centre, before the final scenes of the Crucifixion in Albert Square.

Mixing the words of the Bible with versions of classic Mancunian songs, this modern account of the last days of Christ is AWESOME! Take the time out to watch I beg you (or at least watch the final 10 minutes!)
