What next for this year’s Eurovision finalists?
Czech Republic: Lake Malawi
The Czech Republic has only qualified to the grand final of Eurovision on three occasions so far. First in 2016 when it came 25th, next in 2018 when it finished sixth and this year with the band Lake Malawi, who ended up eleventh with 157 points overall, 150 of those coming from the jury vote! Lake Malawi formed in 2013 and have already released a number of singles and albums prior to entering Eurovision.
Albert Černý, Jeroným Šubrt, Pavel Palát and Patrick Karpentski formed the group in September 2013 taking their name from the song “Calgary” by US indie-folk band Bon Iver. Their debut single “Always June” was released the following year reaching No.34 on the singles chart. Later that year their follow up “Chinese Trees” did a little better and made No.25. The song was the lead track from their debut EP “We Are Making Love Again” released in May 2015, from which three other singles were released during 2015/16.
In early 2016, Palát left the group and was replaced by Antonín Hrabal and prior to the release of their debut album “Surrounded by Light” in 2017, Patrick Karpentski left the group, although he was not replaced and the band continued as a trio. “Surrounded by Light” featured the singles “Paris” and the title track which made the Czech singles chart, together with three other tracks released that did not.
In January 2019 it was announced that the band had been chosen to represent the country at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, submitting their own composition “Friend Is A Friend”. The song same sixth in the first semi final thus qualifying the band to go through to the grand final and on to their eventual eleventh placing. Lake Malawi are playing a number of live dates across the Czech Republic throughout the Summer and have begun work on a new studio album slated for release sometime in 2020!
