What next for this year’s Eurovision finalists?

Cyprus: Tamta

by Christopher Smith

Cyprus first entered Eurovision in 1981 with “Monika” by Island and have only ever come second once in the top three since then, “Fuego” by Eleni Foureira, and that was last year! So in 2019, many Cyprian’s were hoping that this year they would go one better. Their offering was 38 year old Russian born singer Tamta Goduadze, who first came to notice when she came second in Super Idol in Greece in 2004. Tamta tempted with “Replay” and would ultimately finish thirteenth with 109 points, 77 coming from the jury vote.

Tamta released her self-titled debut album in 2006 which included the singles “Faraway”, “Den Telionei Etsi I Agapi” and “Einai Krima” (with Grigoris Petrakos). The following year she represented Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “With Love” which came third that year and hit No.2 on the Greek singles chart. It was the lead single from Tamta’s second studio album “Agapise me” which would peak at No.4 on the Greek album chart and featured the singles “Relax, Take It Easy, Agapise Me” and “Agapo (Wanna Play)”.

Tamta hit the singles chart again in 2009 with “Koita Me” that came from her third album “Tharros/Alitheia”. In 2011 she released a “Best Of” compilation that included three top ten hits, “Oblivion”, “Pare Me” and “Gennithika Gia Sena”. She returned to the top ten in 2017 with “Ilious Ke Thalasses”. In 2015 Tamta again entered Eurovision representing Greece with the song “Unloved” losing out to Maria Elena Kyriakou who came nineteenth with “One Last Breath”.

Tamta was back in 2019 for a third attemptm this time for Cyprus with “Replay”, a song written by Alex Papaconstantinou, Geraldo Sandell, Viktor Svensson, Albin Nedler and Kristoffer Fogelmark. Following this year’s contest, “Replay” has reached No.2 on the Greek singles chart, equalling “With Love”‘s 2007 chart high there. The song has also made the top ten in Belgium and charted in Sweden and Estonia. Tamta will be performing at Athens pride on 8th June and it is rumoured that she will soon enter the studio to record more new music soon after!
