What was the number one song in the UK on 14th February 1958?
By Hayley Beasley Dye
British singer, Michael Holliday was at the top spot with The Story of My Life for 2 weeks.
This is an upbeat, positive tune. Michael’s voice sounds very lovely in this simple love song and is not dissimilar to Bing Crosby’s. There is a certain sadness when listening to his voice though as throughout his career he suffered from crippling stage fright, had mental health issues and died only a few years after this reached number one from a suspected drug overdose. It’s worth remembering that success does not always equate to happiness.

Lyrics
“Someday I’m goin’ to write
The story of my life
I’ll tell about the night we met
And how my heart can’t forget
The way you smiled at me
The story of my life
I’ll tell about the night we met
And how my heart can’t forget
The way you smiled at me
I like’d the world to know
The story of my life
The moment when your lips met mine
And that first exciting time
I held you close to me
The story of my life
The moment when your lips met mine
And that first exciting time
I held you close to me
The sorrow in our love was breakin’ up
The mem’ry of a broken heart
An’ later on, the joy of makin’ up
Never, never more to part
The mem’ry of a broken heart
An’ later on, the joy of makin’ up
Never, never more to part
There’s one thing left to do
Before my story’s through
I’ve got to take you for my wife
So the story of my life
Can start and end with you
Before my story’s through
I’ve got to take you for my wife
So the story of my life
Can start and end with you
The sorrow in our love was breakin’ up
The mem’ry of a broken heart
An’ later on, the joy of makin’ up
Never, never more to part
The mem’ry of a broken heart
An’ later on, the joy of makin’ up
Never, never more to part
There’s one thing left to do
Before my story’s through
I’ve got to take you for my wife
So the story of my life
Can start and end
Can start and end
Can start and end with you”
Before my story’s through
I’ve got to take you for my wife
So the story of my life
Can start and end
Can start and end
Can start and end with you”
