EVERY UK NUMBER ONE: ‘All I Have to Do is Dream/Claudette’ – The Everly Brothers

What was the number one song in the UK on 4th July 1958?

By Hayley Beasley Dye

American rock and roll duo, the Everly Brothers were number one for 7 weeks with All I Have to Do is Dream and Claudette.

All I Have to Do is Dream: What a well written song. The melody and obviously the lyrics epitomise the dreamy feeling you get when you fall in love especially in this case a seemingly unrequited love. It’s a floaty, relaxing and pretty tune that gave them their first no.1 in the UK.

Claudette: In contrast Claudette is a speedy, upbeat song about the beginnings of a relationship. It’s a great little tune, but does not compare the superior All I Have to Do is Dream.

Lyrics

All I Have to Do is Dream:
“Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream
When I want you in my arms
When I want you and all your charms
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream
When I feel blue in the night
And I need you to hold me tight
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam
I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine
Anytime night or day
Only trouble is, gee whiz
I’m dreamin’ my life away
I need you so that I could die
I love you so and that is why
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam
I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine
Anytime night or day
Only trouble is, gee whiz
I’m dreamin’ my life away
I need you so that I could die
I love you so and that is why
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream”
Claudette:
“Oh oh, Claudette
Oh oh, Claudette
I got a brand new baby and I feel so good
She loves me even better than I thought she would
I’m on my way to her house an I’m plumb outta breath
A-when I see her tonight I’m gonna squeeze her to death
Claudette, pretty little babe, Claudette
Never makes me wait, Claudette
She’s the greatest little girl that I’ve ever met
I get the best lovin’ that I’ll ever get
From Claudette, pretty little babe, Claudette
Oh oh, Claudette
Well, I’m a lucky man my baby treats me right
She’s gonna let me hug and kiss and hold her tight
When the date is over and we’re at her front door
When I kiss her good night I’ll holler more more more
Claudette, pretty little babe, Claudette
Never makes me wait, Claudette
She’s the greatest little girl that I’ve ever met
I get the best lovin’ that I’ll ever get
From Claudette, pretty little babe, Claudette
Oh oh, Claudette
When me an my new baby have a date or three
I’m gonna ask my baby if she’ll marry me
I’m gonna be so happy for the rest of my life
When my brand new baby is my brand new wife
Claudette, pretty little babe, Claudette
Never makes me wait, Claudette
She’s the greatest little girl that I’ve ever met
I get the best lovin’ that I’ll ever get
From Claudette, pretty little babe, Claudette
Oh oh, Claudette
Mmh mmh, Claudette
Oh oh, Claudette
Mmh mmh, Claudette”
