FRESH: ‘Drink Yours Too’ – SUMif

SUMif is back with “Drink Yours Too”.

by Christopher Smith

In an oft dark world, sometimes we just need to let loose and dance. And SUMif wants to be the one to provide the soundtrack. Bubbly, energetic, effervescent, it’s the kind of music that is guaranteed to make you move. Her new song “Drink Yours Too” is out now and she has told us exactly what it’s all about! “Drink Yours Too’ is about this one time I met someone via Instagram who lived on the other side of the world. We talked and Facetimed for hours for a couple of months, and then I flew from San Francisco to Barcelona for a weekend to meet her. It was a complete fail. no regrets though, I could have spent another 100 hours of my life facetiming/talking with her, but instead I figured it out quickly along with a great story!”.

Raised in LA on Sheryl Crow and pop punk, Steph Wells aka SUMif started her musical journey when she moved to New York City to study music business at NYU. After graduation Wells packed up once again and headed to the songwriting mecca of Nashville to try her hand there. After her stint in Nashville, Wells decided another move was in order. “I wanted to get back to California – just not LA,” she explains. “So I landed in SF. I love the proximity to nature and natural beauty that surrounds you here”. Bay Area waters have always had a reputation for empowering young musicians. And Wells will attest to it. Trading in her acoustic guitar for midi controllers, she chiseled a spot for SUMif in the Bay’s scene right away.

Released entirely independently, SUMif had low expectations, but she soon found that in the turbulent world we are living in, people are drawn to music that lifts their spirits (and moves their feet). In her first year of releases SUMif managed to land on 2 of Spotify’s highly-coveted New Music Fridays and gained over 1.5 million streams. One of her early singles, “Lay Down”, skyrocketed up the HypeMachine charts, quickly hitting number 1. SUMif’s growing buzz landed her opening slots for indie and electro-pop darlings Vérité, Lauv, Ella Vos, Kučka, and Little Boots, as well as a slot playing at Popscene, San Francisco’s premier indie music party. SUMif’s energetic live performance has been praised by key local press such as The Bay Bridged and SF Critic. By the end of 2017 SUMif had started making waves among key tastemakers with praise from NYLON, Atwood Magazine, Damaged Magazine, High Clouds, and Indie Shuffle, and was added to Spotify’s Metropolis playlist.

SUMif kicked off 2018 with her debut EP, Pretty Cage and is already in the studio pumping out her next round of bubbly hits including “Love Shop”, “Say”, “Disco Love”, “Body” and her most recent, “Know You“. While the music is undoubtedly uplifting electro-pop, SUMif journey as a young queer female artist hasn’t always been the easiest, but she won’t let that hold her back. Writing, producing and performing all her own music, SUMif is ready to show the world she is a true triple threat.
