EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘Cathy’s Clown’ – The Everly Brothers

What was the number one song in the UK on 5th May 1960?

By Hayley Beasley Dye

American duo, The Everly Brothers, get their first UK number one with Cathy’s Clown, which was number one for 7 weeks.

Oh dear. This is quite the heart rending song. The poor man in this song has been made a fool of by Cathy and now he’s heartbroken and ashamed that everyone knows that he’s Cathy’s clown. Ok, it’s a story that’s probably been told several times before in pop music, but you get a sense that it is being told in a slightly different way with an undeniable new music sound that became hugely influential in the 60s.

Wikipedia

“Cathy’s Clown” is a popular song, written and recorded by The Everly Brothers, in which the singer informs Cathy that “[I] don’t want your love anymore.” “Cathy’s Clown” was The Everly Brothers’ first single for Warner Bros., after they had recorded for Archie Bleyer’s Cadence label for three years. It sold eight million copies worldwide, spending five weeks at number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and one week on the R&B chart. The song spent seven weeks at number 1 on the UK Singles Chart in May and June 1960, and was the Everly Brothers’ biggest-selling single and their third and final U.S. number 1 hit. Billboard ranked it as the number 3 song of the year for 1960. In 2004, it was ranked 149th on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Lyrics

“Don’t want your love anymore
Don’t want your kisses, that’s for sure
I die each time I hear this sound
Here he comes, that’s Cathy’s clown
I gotta stand tall
You know a man can’t crawl
When he knows you’re tellin’ lies and he hears ’em passing by
He’s not a man at all
Don’t want your love anymore
Don’t want your kisses, that’s for sure
I die each time I hear this sound
Here he comes, that’s Cathy’s clown
When you see me shed a tear
And you know that it’s sincere
Don’t you think it’s kinda sad that you’re treating me so bad
Or don’t you even care?
Don’t want your love anymore
Don’t want your kisses, that’s for sure
I die each time I hear this sound
Here he comes, that’s Cathy’s clown
That’s Cathy’s clown
That’s Cathy’s clown”
