EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For?’ – Emile Ford and the Checkmates

What was the number one song in the UK on 18th December 1959?

By Hayley Beasley Dye

We end the 1950s with Saint Lucian born, but London-based singer and musician, Emile Ford who was number one for 6 weeks with What Do You Want to Make Those Eyes at Me For?

Truth be known, I love a bit of Emile Ford me. This track is a great tune. It’s doo-wopping and foot tapping galore. I’ve got a question though. What does “I’ll get you a lonesome night” mean? Does that mean he’ll just leave her alone? Or does it mean something different altogether? Also, you’ve got to admire a man that has the confidence to literally call himself dynamite in bed. Bless.

Lyrics

What do you wanna make those eyes at me for
If they don’t mean what they say
Ooh, they make me glad, they make me sad
They make me want a lot of things that I never had
You’re fooling around with me now
Oh, you lead me on and then you run away
Oh, that’s alright
I’ll get you a lonesome night
And baby you’ll find you’re messing with dynamite
So what do you wanna make those eyes at me for
If they don’t mean what they say
What do you wanna make those eyes at me for
If they don’t mean what they say
Ooh, they make me glad, they make me sad
They make me want a lot of things that I never had
You’re fooling around with me now
Oh, you lead me on and then you run away
Oh, that’s alright
I’ll get you a lonesome night
And baby you’ll find you’re messing with dynamite
So what do you wanna make those eyes at me for
If they don’t mean what they say
What do you wanna make those eyes at me for
If they don’t mean what they say
Ooh, they make me glad, they make me sad
They make me want a lot of things that I never had
You’re fooling around with me now
Oh, you lead me on and then you run away
Oh, that’s alright
I’ll get you a lonesome night
And baby you’ll find you’re messing with dynamite
So what do you wanna make those eyes at me for
If they don’t mean what they say
If they don’t mean what they say
If they don’t mean what they say, yeah!
