EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘Reach For the Stars’/’Climb Ev’ry Mountain’ – Shirley Bassey

What was the number one song in the UK on 21st September 1961?

By Hayley Beasley Dye

Shirley Bassey was number one for 1 week with the AA side Reach For the Stars and Climb Ev’ry Mountain.

Reach For the Stars:

This is your usual emotive affair from Shirls with her trademark powerful belt. It’s a good ‘un, but I prefer the other side to this AA.

Climb Ev’ry Mountain:

As most of you know, this song is originally from the musical Sound of Music. Our Shirley’s version is a stunning and moving rendition. Complete with heart rending vocals from Shirley and emotional backing vocals. Try listening to this while keeping your eyes dry- I dare you.

Lyrics

Reach For the Stars:
I reach for the stars
When I reach for your love
For so far above me you always will be
Like a clown longs to be a king in a play
I long for the things that are so far away
I reach for the stars
When I reach for your hand
But stars tumble down
From the clouds to the land
When you come to my arms
In that moment devine
All the stars in the sky
Are mine, all mine
I reach for the stars
When I reach for your hand
But stars tumble down
From the clouds to the land
When you come to my arms
In that moment devine
All the stars in the sky
Are mine, all mine

Climb Ev’ry Mountain:

Climb ev’ry mountain
Search high and low
Follow ev’ry by-way
Every path you know
Climb ev’ry mountain
Ford ev’ry stream
Follow ev’ry rainbow
‘Till you find your dream
A dream that will need
All the love you can give
Everyday of your life
For as long as you live
Climb ev’ry mountain
Ford ev’ry stream
Follow ev’ry rainbow
‘Till you find your dream
Climb ev’ry mountain
Ford ev’ry stream
Follow ev’ry rainbow
‘Till you find your dream
