EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘Tower of Strength’ – Frankie Vaughan

What was the number one song in the UK on 7th December 1961?

By Hayley Beasley Dye

English singer, Frankie Vaughan was number one for 3 weeks with Tower of Strength.

G’wan Frankie! He sure could belt out a tune, couldn’t he? This song has wonderful vocals from Frankie, sung with heart felt passion. It’s one of those songs, that the more you listen to it, the more you love it and I can see why it was so popular at the time.

Lyrics

If I were a tower of strength, I’d walk away
I’d look in your eyes and here’s what I’d say
I don’t want you, I don’t need you, I don’t love you any more
And I’d walk out the door
You’d be down on your knees
You’d be calling to me
But a tower of strength is a-something
I’ll never be
If I were a tower of strength, I’d watch you cry
I’d laugh at your tears and tell you goodbye
I don’t want you, I don’t need you, I don’t love you any more
And I’d walk out the door
You’d be down on your knees
You’d be calling to me
But a tower of strength is a-something
I’ll never be
No I don’t want you, I don’t need you, I don’t love you any more
And I’d walk out the door
You’d be down on your knees, yeah
You’d be calling to me
But a tower of strength is a-something
I’ll never be
Well a tower of strength is a-something
I’ll never be
