FRESH: ‘Mama’s Song’ – Vealy

Vealy starts 2020 with “Mama’s Song”

Vealy is a pop/soul singer-songwriter born and raised in the Philippines. She has been singing since before she could start reading lyrics! Growing up, she loved singing Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Diana Ross…basically everyone her grandma loved listening to. She watched all the singing shows and later competed in local talent shows. She moved to the United States in 2013 at age 17. She then went to college for nursing in Chicago, but quickly realized she had a passion for performing, singing and writing songs. She had acting, music improv, voice lessons and rehearsals for musicals on top of her nursing classes!

She became a registered nurse at age 20, worked in the ER for an entire year; doing open mics, writing songs and singing on the side. She even joined a Chicago singing competition, and made it to the top 5. She finally mustered the courage to quit nursing and follow her heart. Here she is in Los Angeles, a full-time musician—writing original music, performing in local shows, even busking sometimes with her keyboard on Melrose Ave. Her latest single and her first release of 2020 is “Mama’s Song” and she recently took time out to tell us all about herself and the song.

“I moved to LA in January 2019, I had money saved up from my year and a half of nursing, and I’ll be honest I was LIVING life! I wake up in the morning and I had all the time in the world! I wrote songs, I learned stuff about music, I sang a lot, I performed/busked a lot! Months went by and my savings went down fast! LA is pretty expensive apparently. After 6 months of “living life”, I started to go back into nursing, no not full time as I was, but just when I needed money and shifts were available. I still had a lot of creative time. I kept on doing that for about four more months until I get exhausted. The money I was making was only enough for rent and food”.

After the month was over, I’d be at $0 to sometimes even negative. And I have to work my way up to rent and food money again. It seemed like I had no other choice but to go back to full time nursing I’d have to sacrifice and manage my creative time so I could earn some living $$. I wrote “Mama’s Song” right after I got hired as a full-time overnight ER nurse. I felt weak at first because it seemed like I was just going back to my regular life, lots of $$ to spend but I didn’t have time for music or for self-growth and reflection… but then after I wrote the song, I felt better. “This pain will turn to beauty” “Nothing worth it ever comes easy”. The song helped me change my perspective. I will only become stronger because of this obstacle. I hope this will help you too”.
