FRESH: ‘Violent Heart’ – BLOODHYPE

BLOODHYPE discuss a “Violent Heart”

BLOODHYPE are a Berlin-based, independent gang of four: Elmar Weyland, Erik Laser, Matt Mueller, and Christopher Kohl. The BLOODHYPE plan was simple: Make music with friends in a flat-share in former East-Berlin, rush home after nights-out to record tracks on Elmar Weyland’s laptop, release the first EP in 2018, get over two million streams across all platforms, start a hype in music blogs from London to Lisbon, Paris to Poznan. Was there even a plan? No-one can remember.

After a summer of festivals, support tours with Blackout Problems and Taking Back Sunday, a sold-out german tour, BLOODHYPE are making plans again. Following hot on the heels of late 2019’s “Hate Candidate”, BLOODHYPE’s next single, “Violent Heart”, is a shimmering 80s throwback with modern swagger – a perfect soundtrack to a high-school movie full of self-pity, drama, and heartbreak. Masterminded by frontman Weyland and UK producer John “P Nut” Harrison (Amy Winehouse, Alice Merton), BLOODHYPE’s signature retro-futuristic sound has reached a whole new level.

Synth basslines punch through layers of nostalgic chords and echoing keys, setting the mood for Weyland’s strong melodies and delivering their catchiest track to date. The music video works like synesthesia, a violently vivid display of lights, shadows, and performance. With each second Weyland seems to grow, ditching his guitar for “Violent Heart” and donning a dapper red 80s-cut suit, and whirling like a Michael Hutchence/Falco lovechild into the role of a fully-fledged frontman.

The “Violent Heart” video also sees Sofia Salvo join the band – so naturally, it feels like the saxophonist from Buenos Aires has always been in BLOODHYPE – adding another distorted silhouette and an extra nod to their favourite decade. Summer 2020 will bring a long-awaited, debut album Modern Eyes, a collection of tracks recorded in spaces across Berlin, from the legendary Hansa Studios down to dark underground practice rooms in Kreuzberg. You can hear the tracks live on their headline tour this fall and see for yourself why they’ve become Berlin’s worst kept secret.
