EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘Help!’ – The Beatles

What was the number one song in the UK on 5th August 1965?

Here’s The Beatles again with Help!, which was number for 3 weeks.

The title song from The Beatles’ film was actually a cry for help from John Lennon. He wrote it as a reaction to The Beatles’ quick rise to fame. It is yet another short, sharp catchy tune from The Beatles. However, the difference being that not only is it one of the best songs they every did, but it is one of the greatest pop tunes every written.

Lyrics

(Help!) I need somebody
(Help!) not just anybody
(Help!) you know I need someone
Help!
I never needed anybody’s help in any way
But now these days are gone, I’m not so self assured (but now these days are gone)
(And now I find) Now I find I’ve changed my mind and opened up the doors
Help me if you can, I’m feeling down
And I do appreciate you being ’round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won’t you please, please help me?
And now my life has changed in oh so many ways (and now my life has changed)
My independence seems to vanish in the haze
But every now and then I feel so insecure (I know that I)
I know that I just need you like I’ve never done before
Help me if you can, I’m feeling down
And I do appreciate you being ’round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won’t you please, please help me
When I was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody’s help in any way
But now these days are gone, I’m not so self assured (but now these days are gone)
(And now I find) now I find I’ve changed my mind and opened up the doors
Help me if you can, I’m feeling down
And I do appreciate you being ’round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won’t you please, please help me, help me, help me, ooh
