Alara has “Demons”
Alluring New Jersey artist Alara joins the Village and we’re pleased to bring you news of her forthcoming music. In her new single, “Demons,” Alara sings “the world may not be kind, but open up your mind – Come to me like I come to you,” reminding us to be good to each other during heavy times. This accomplished songwriter got her start at the age of 11, writing tunes and becoming a self-taught guitarist.
“My mom is an incredible singer” says Alara, which is who ignited her love for singing. She grew up with ABBA, Gloria Estefan, The Beatles and Stevie Wonder helping shape and grow her love for different styles. As a young adult commuting from NJ to NYC, Alara quickly became comfortable writing music and recording voice memos on the train to and from Penn Station. “I figured out who I am as a person and as a musician in NYC” she explains.
After cutting her teeth at New York City open mics and making a name for herself in the downtown music scene, Alara adopted her current moniker and put out the first two singles of her upcoming release. Taking influence from notable creators like Thom Yorke, Damien Rice, and Kevin Parker, Alara created her new EP, which is set to release this Spring. With her signature style and soothing voice, Alara is set to become an artist to look out for in 2020.
New single “Demons” is soft and hazy but undoubtedly powerful and Alara’s voice has got a soul-healing quality. The single brings in mixes of indie-pop, dreamy 80’s synths and some indie-rock percussion that swells in the soundscape. Possessing qualities of namesakes like Lana Del Rey and St. Vincent, Alara’s effortless vocals glide atop the silky production and bring a wash of calm over the listener.
On the single Alara explains, “‘Demons’ is about finding solace in the idea that everyone is going through something. Your demons may not look like mine, but we shouldn’t be afraid to admit that they exist. Just because something negative happened in the past doesn’t mean something positive can’t happen in the future. You have to make sure you’re open to it”.
The upcoming single and EP, which Alara co-produced with Steven LaFashia of Resonant Recording, has opened the door to future projects. “I plan to produce music for other artists regularly and help them make sense of the sounds in their heads. In that respect, Grimes has been a huge influence on me. Music production shouldn’t just be a man’s territory and she’s one the best examples of that”.
