Phil Collins 1982

COVER vs ORIGINAL: ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’

The song, “You Can’t Hurry Love”, was originally recorded by The Supremes in 1966

It’s those Supremes again! Obviously their songs are worth covering! This one came just before “You Keep Me Hanging On” in July 1966 and was written by the same team – Brian Holland (b.1941) and Lamont Dozier (1941-2022). It topped the US singles chart and reached No.3 in the UK.

Sixteen years later, Genesis lead singer Phil Collins (b.1950) recorded the song for his second solo album “Hello, I Must Be Going” and released it as a single in November 1982. His version topped the chart in the UK, Canada, Belgium and The Netherlands and made No.10 in America.

But whose version is the best? THE SUPREMES’ original or PHIL’s cover?
