EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘The Carnival is Over’ – The Seekers

What was the number one song in the UK on 25th November 1965?

The Seekers are back and this time with The Carnival is Over, which hit the top spot for 3 weeks.

Remarkably, The Carnival is Over was originally a Russian folk song from 1883. It was hugely successful in the UK and at it’s peak it sold almost 100,00 copies a day. It is also no.30 in the chart of the the all time best-selling UK singles ever. Impressive stuff. However, it completely boggles my mind why this song above so many was so successful. Sure, there is an emotive quality about it and the steady rhythm of the melody is both hypnotic and almost haunting, but really one of the most popular songs in the UK ever? Having said that, I listened to Nick Cave’s version after listening to this and I’m sorry to say Seekers fan, but it is far superior.

Lyrics

Say goodbye my own true lover
As we sing a lovers song
How it breaks my heart to leave you
Now the carnival is gone
High above the dawn is waiting
And my tears are falling rain
For the carnival is over
We may never meet again
Like a drum my heart was beating
And your kiss was sweet as wine
But the joys of love are fleeting
For Pierrot and Columbine
Now the harbour light is calling
This will be our last goodbye
Though the carnival is over
I will love you till I die
Like a drum my heart was beating
And your kiss was sweet as wine
But the joys of love are fleeting
For Pierrot and Columbine
Now the harbour light is calling
This will be our last goodbye
Though the carnival is over
I will love you till I die
Though the carnival is over
I will love you till I die
