EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘Michelle’ – The Overlanders

What was the number one song in the UK on 27th January 1966?

British band, The Overlanders, was number one for 3 weeks with Michelle.

A somewhat needless cover version as it sounds very similar to the original and was released only a month after the Rubber Soul album (the Beatles album that features Michelle). However, I’m more interested in the back story as to why the Beatles gave The Overlanders their blessing to release the song. It was because The Overlanders’ record label had previously agreed to Epstein’s request to withdraw the release of a single by John Lennon’s estranged father, Alf Lennon. So, that lead me down a rabbit hole to read all about John Lennon’s dad and then his mother and about 3 hours later, I’m here writing this review. Overall, it’s a fine cover and The Overlanders should probably be grateful for John Lennon’s fascinating family politics.

Lyrics

Michelle ma belle
These are words that go together well
My michelle
Michelle ma belle
Sont les mots qui vont trés bien ensemble
Trés bien ensemble
I love you, I love you, I love you
That? s all I want to say
Until I find a way
I will say the only words I know that you? ll understand
Michelle ma belle
Sont les mots qui vont trés bien ensemble
Trés bien ensemble
I need to, I need to, I need to
I need to make you see
Oh what you mean to me
Until I do I? m hoping you will know what I mean
I love you
I want you, I want you, I want you
I think you know by now
I? ll get to you somehow
Until I do I? m telling you so you? ll understand
Michelle ma belle
Sont les mots qui vont trés bien ensemble
Trés bien ensemble
And I will say the only words I know that you? ll understand
My michelle
