EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘Young Girl’ – Gary Puckett & The Union Gap

What was the number one song in the UK on 22nd May 1968?

American group, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap were number one for 4 weeks with Young Girl.

So let’s get the context of this song out of the way…it’s about a man discovering that his girlfriend is actually younger than what she said she was. In fact she is illegally too young to “to give him love”. Kudos to him telling her to leave and go home to her mother, but the lyrics still a bit icky as he describes “that come on look in your eyes” and as he tells her to “get out of here before I change my mind”. We hope, we really hope that he didn’t. The tune itself is catchy, but nothing remarkable. I’d rather just move on to the next song tbh….

Lyrics

Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run girl
You’re much too young girl
With all the charms of a woman
You’ve kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe you’re old enough
To give me love
And now it hurts to know the truth
Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run girl
You’re much too young girl
Beneath your perfume and your make-up
You’re just a baby in disguise
And though you know that it’s wrong to be
Alone with me
That come on look is in your eyes
Young girl, get out my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run girl
You’re much too young girl
So hurry home to your mama
I’m sure she wonders where you are
Get out of here
Before I have the time
To change my mind
‘Cause I’m afraid we’ll go too far
Young girl, get out my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run girl
You’re much too young girl (repeat to fade)
