Jennifer Lopez

COVER vs ORIGINAL: ‘Waiting For Tonight’

The song, “Waiting For Tonight”, was originally recorded by 3rd Party in 1997

US girl trio 3rd Party were formed in 1997 of Maria Christensen, Karmine Alers and Elaine Borja. They released two singles, “Can U Feel It?” and “Love Is Alive”, but neither did very well. Their debut album, “Alive”, contained the song “Waiting For Tonight”, which was co-written by Christensen. 3rd Party lasted just a year and were dropped their label, A&M.

Christensen was keen for the song to be developed and it was offered to actress turned singer Jennifer Lopez to record for her debut album. Lopez apparently said on first hearing “I never want to hear that song again. It’s horrible and so cheesy!” The song underwent some drastic reproduction by Ric Wake and Lopez finally accepted it. It was released as her third single in late 1999 and reached No.8 in the US and No.5 in the UK.

But whose version is the best? 3RD PARTY’s original or JENNIFER LOPEZ’s cover?
