EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘Do It Again’ – The Beach Boys

What was the number one song in the UK on 28th August 1968?

The Beach Boys are back again, but this time with Do It Again, which reached the top spot for 1 week.

Interestingly, 1968 seemed to be a year that the big, popular bands returned to their musical roots. The Beatles did it with Lady Madonna, The Stones did it with Jumpin’ Jack Flash and then the Beach Boys did it (again) with Do It Again– a call-back to the surf-based material from their earlier years. It is a very catchy Beach Boys tune with it’s classic voice harmonising and simple melody and lyrics. I like it a lot and the more you listen to it, the more you love it.

It’s automatic when I
Talk with old friends
The conversation turns to
Girls we knew when their
Hair was soft and long and the
Beach was the place to go
Suntanned bodies and
Waves of sunshine the
California girls and a
Beautiful coastline
Warmed up weather
Let’s get together and
Do it again
With a girl the lonely sea looks good
Makes your night times warm and out of sight
Been so long
(Hey now, hey now, hey now, hey now, hey now)
(Hey now, hey now, hey now, hey now, hey now)
Well I’ve been thinking ’bout
All the places we’ve surfed and danced and
All the faces we’ve missed so let’s get
Back together and do it again
