COVER vs ORIGINAL: ‘Last Thing On My Mind’

The song, “Last Thing On My Mind”, was originally recorded by Bananarama in 1992

Bananarama have often covered and often been covered, not many acts can say that. Covers of their own songs have often been more successful than their own original version and “Last Thing On My Mind” is one of them. The song was the follow up to “Movin’ On”, released in November 1992 but failed to be as successful as its predecessor, peaking at No.71 in the UK.

“Last Thing On My Mind” was produced by Mike Stock and Peter Waterman and just six years later, Waterman recycled the song for his latest ‘find’, Steps. The quintet released their version as their second single in April 1998 and took it to No.6 in the UK while the song was also a sizeable hit across Europe and a top five success in Australia.

But which version is the best? BANANARAMA’s original or STEPS’ cover?
