TRIVIA: First Self-Penned Number One on The UK Top 40
Who wrote their own chart topper first?
Well, that mantle falls to Italian conductor Annunzio Paolo Mantovani (1905-1980), whose “Cara Mia” went to No.1 in July 1954. It was composed by Mantovani and Bunny Lewis (under pen names Tulio Trapani and Lee Lange respectively).
The first act to entirely write their own chart topper were The Dreamweavers, whose song “It’s Almost Tomorrow” topped the chart in March 1956.
Twenty-eight years later, Stevie Wonder became the first artist ever to write, produce and entirely perform a number one with “I Just Called To Say I Love You” in September 1984.
