COVER vs ORIGINAL: ‘In Too Deep’

The song, “In Too Deep”, was originally recorded by Jenny Morris in 1995

“In Too Deep” was written by Rick Nowles (b.1954), produced by INXS’ Andrew Farriss (b.1959) and recorded by New Zealand born singer Jenny Morris (b.1956) for her fourth studio album, “Salvation Jane” in 1995. The song was released as the fourth and final single late in 1995 and was the lowest charting of the four, only making No.143 on the Australian singles chart, to date, her last appearance there.

Undeterred, Nowles called upon his friend Belinda Carlisle, who he had written so many of her big hits of the late 1980’s, who was recording a new album at the time. Her version of “In Too Deep” was produced by Dave Tickle (b.1959) and released as the lead single in July 1996, this time making No.11 ‘down under’ as well as being a hit across Europe, most notably in the UK, where it peaked at No.6, her first top ten hit there for six years.

But whose version is the best? JENNY MORRIS’ original or BELINDA CARLISLE’s cover?
