EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘Baby Jump’ – Mungo Jerry

What was the number one song in the UK on 6th March 1971?

Mungo Jerry are back and this time with Baby Jump, which stayed at number one for 2 weeks.

This song originally only charted at no.32 and then dropped out of the charts, all due to a national postal strike that was taking place at the time. It re-entered the charts again two weeks later and eventually made it to number one. It’s a song with a very early-70s rock sound to it along with rockabilly piano throughout it. It’s not particularly catchy or that enjoyable to be honest, but it represents 1971 perfectly.

Lyrics

She wears those micromini dresses
Hair hanging down her backShe wears those seethrough sweaters
She likes to wear her stocking black
And if I see her tonightYou can bet your life I’ll attack.
She got beautiful teeth
A toothpaste adman’s dream.
She got a beautiful form
The best I’ve ever seen.
I’ gonna get her tonightI don’t care where she been.
Well
I said baby
BabyBaby what you doin’ to me.
I said baby
BabyBaby what you doin’ to me.
I said baby
BabyBaby jump into my dream.
I dream that she was Lady Chatterley’n
I was the game keeper.
I dream that I was Da Vinci and
She was the Mona Lisa.
I dream that I was Humbert and
She was Lolita.I said baby
BabyBaby what you doin’ to me.
I said baby
BabyBaby what you doin to me.
I said baby
BabyBaby jump into my dream.
