Bronski Beat

COVER vs ORIGINAL: ‘Smalltown Boy’

The song, “Smalltown Boy”, was originally recorded by Bronski Beat in 1984

80’s synthwave classic “Smalltown Boy” was the debut single from UK trio Bronski Beat (Steve Bronski, Larry Steinbachek and Jimmy Somerville) and was released in June 1984. It became an instant smash hit all over the world, topping many charts including the US dance chart. It peaked at No.3 in the UK and No.48 on the US singles chart.

The song has been covered and also sampled extensively over the years but in 2020 a new version has been produced with Spanish singer Ricky Merino (b.1986), who has also teamed up with former Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst for a second version of the song, released as a duet! Let’s see how these do…

But which version is the best? BRONSKI BEAT’s original or RICKY MERINO’s cover?
