SPOTLIGHT: Roma Rose

A Rose by any other name would not sound so sweet.

Scottish pop folk, singer songwriter with an amazingly infectious sound.

After a short hiatus from the music scene, Roma returns with a new name, new sound and brand new perspective.

Her songs have a fresh thrumming energy, are lyrically vibrant and fun, as well as raw and unapologetically honest, as she intricately weaves the experience of early motherhood into her music.

During her break from music, Roma had her first child. This experience, coupled with a particularly long and grueling recovery, instilled in her a powerful drive and determination to create again and a desire to be open about motherhood.

Her first two tracks have been championed across multiple online publications and playlists, as well as gaining support from BBC Introducing and Charlie Ashcroft’s Fresh Finds. Her third single – “Stay Like This” is set for release on November 27th.

Created with an exciting all female team, Roma’s debut tracks have been co-written and produced by Jessica Sharman (Ward Thomas/Hannah Grace/Sarah Darling) and mixed by Isabel Gracefield (Tom Walker/Christine and The Queens).

“I wasn’t sure what my place would be – should be – in the music industry after becoming a mother.

Roma – tell us more about the story behind ‘How To Feel’…

“Is it normal to feel like a child when shit gets real?”

How To Feel is a response to life changing moments that make us feel young, childlike and bereft of all the answers.

“When I brought my newborn home, I had this overwhelming feeling that I shouldn’t have been allowed to leave the hospital. How the hell am I supposed to look after this little life, when I am broken.” – Roma Rose

Described as a “comforting anguish” – this song explores the universal feeling of anxiety when life overtakes you, and the strange solace of knowing so many feel the same, when faced with life’s big moments. Love comes hand in hand with fear.

This is beautiful!

BBC INTRODUCING

As if that wasn’t enough there’s also an acoustic version of the track.

“We happened upon this almost by accident and then I couldn’t let it go. The juxtaposition of the warped vocal and the organic, stripped back piano felt eery, heartbreaking and suited to the song’s story. So we decided to build on our happy accident and release this version as a follow up acoustic.”

Roma – tell us about the next single, we can’t wait for ‘Stay Like This’…

Stay Like This is a modern day love song, encouraging us to live like we want to, stay in the present and tear up the memos of who we think we should be.

Originally written through the eyes of Roma’s young daughter, and taking new inspiration from Scandi pop and folklore, Stay Like This is the final instalment in Roma’s tryptic of tracks for 2020 and is released on 27th November.
