COVER vs ORIGINAL: ‘Happy Together’

The song, “Happy Together”, was originally recorded by The Turtles in 1966

“Ba ba ba ba baba du ba ba ba ba, for all my life”. Yes, that’s how “Happy Together” goes if you had forgotten! Written by Alan Gordon (1944-2008) and Gary Bonner in 1966, it was recorded by American band, The Turtles for their fourth album of the same name. It was released as a single in February 1967 and topped the US singles chart, reaching No.2 in Canada and No.12 in the UK.

There have been many covers of the song ever since. Those that have charted include Hugh Montenegro in 1969 (US No.29), Tony and Dawn in 1972 (US No.79) and Captain & Tennille in 1980 (US No.53). The most successful international version of the song came from former Neighbour-cum-pop star Jason Donovan in 1991, who look his version to No.10 in the UK, two places higher than the original!

But which version is the best? THE TURTLES’ original or JASON’s cover?
