Amy Winehouse

COVER vs ORIGINAL: ‘Valerie’ (Zutons/Winehouse)

The song, “Valerie”, was originally recorded by The Zutons in 2006

Blues/Soul/Rock ‘postcard’ anthem “Valerie” was written by Dave McCabe, Sean Payne, Abi Harding, Boyan Chowdhury and Russell Pritchard of British band The Zutons for their second album, “Tired Of Hanging Around”, in 2006. It was released as the second single in June that year and became the band’s second UK top ten hit, peaking at No.9 and going on to sell more than 400,000 copies there.

Just a year later, producer Mark Ronson released his version of the song with Amy Winehouse on vocals, giving it a more Jazz/big band production. It was the third single to come from his album, “Version”, and appeared in October 2007, this time making No.2 in the UK and also recording a Gold certification for sales of 400,000 copies. Wider afield, this new version reached the US R&B chart (No.1) and also topped the singles chart in The Netherlands. Winehouse released a solo version of the song the following year, which peaked at No.37 at home.

But whose version is the best? THE ZUTONS’ original or RONSON/WINEHOUSE’s cover?
